Story is not the best but only because the payoff is pretty whatever IMO. Other than that all the playable characters are distinct, multi-faceted and fun to play as and their individual stories/struggles are entertaining and well made in their own ways. I only wish one of them wasn't cheapened by one of the dumbest plot twists I've seen so far in this series. It's not a total makeover from Yakuza 3, it simply takes a good engine/systems and improves upon them like certain other sequels you may have played which is fine IMO.

A lot of good content for their first 7th gen game with a heartfelt story to go along with it. I wish the bounty hunting would come back.

On it's own this game is already great, but you have to play the rest of them to really appreciate how good of an origin game this is as well as the quality of the free roam activities.

Yakuza Kiwami taught me maybe I should give remakes a chance. Yakuza Kiwami 2 taught me that I actually shouldn't. The performance and anti-aliasing on PC is pretty rough along with half the cutscene dialogue being lower quality than the other games? What the hell is up with that? I did not really like the engine either, I'm sure they improved it a bit in the future and it works better for the turn-based JRPG games I've heard Yakuza evolved into, but when it comes to navigation and combat the Dragon Engine feels very off for me. I have yet to play the original PS2 version of this game (I'm a fake fan, I know) but I heard they cut or changed a few things unnecessarily to add, what, the cabaret club minigame which is copied and pasted from Yakuza 0 that makes absolutely no sense in the context of this game? Levelling/upgrade points are needlessly complicated as well. I thought the story dragged sometimes but eventually I started warming up to it and enjoyed what it was going for honestly...until that final chapter. Good lord, they destroyed any good faith I was beginning to have in this game in that last hour and a half. Unfortunately, despite having quite a few good things about it, Kiwami 2 did not feel like a worthy sequel to Kiwami 1. The latter instantly became my favourite entry, meanwhile this one instantly became my least favourite. Granted I have not played Yakuza 6 yet, but despite it being on the same engine I doubt it can get worse than Yakuza Kiwami 2.

Gameplay/engine qualities of Yakuza 0 and the story qualities of the original game. This combo is what makes it the best Yakuza game IMO.

Where to start and where to end with a game like this one. There's discourse these days about games that either lean into storytelling/immersion or into gameplay; I think Red Dead Redemption is one of the few games that balances both of these perfectly. The world, the writing, the ideas and everything else are absolutely beautiful. At all times you feel like a badass, it's the quintessential spaghetti western gunslinger fantasy. But underneath the bravado this game tells an equally beautiful and deeply saddening story about life, the end of the American frontier and the purity of family even when all else around you is rotten. Graphical/hardware limitations means nothing to this game, as it creates a perfect window into the old west and their timeless representation in old Italian Westerns, with nothing but the hardware of the Xbox 360 and a code so messy the game just about works (although we're on PC now, this part still applies to the original release I guess). From the dusty heat-waving horizons to the genius stem-based soundtrack, this has to be one of my favourite game when it comes to pure immersion and authenticity, alongside Max Payne and Star Wars Jedi Outcast. There is an incredible lonely and melancholy feeling in this game. It raises various existential topics, like it's holding a mirror upon the world itself. The progress of the modern world is unstoppable, everyone who doesn’t go along with it falls by the wayside. John Marston knows the Wild Wests end will be his end. The loneliness of the endless prairie mirrors the soul of a man who is searching for his place in the world, creating an absolutely unparalleled atmosphere that is supported by the brilliant story-telling and strong characters. Don't mistake it though, this game still has the signature Rockstar humour and satire, Seth has to be one of my favourite side characters in the entire Rockstar library. Although the story is simpler and shorter than Redemption 2, I think that's why it's ultimately better written. There is a very clear goal with the writing; to document the death of the west and the odyssey of John Marston going through hell for his family and learning more about his own nature along the way. The writing is totally sophisticated in this game, a great deal of the games conversations feel like a philosophical debate between two people without coming off as unnatural. There is a lot to be learned from this game, most of all how sad of a world we live in. John is a man who's lived a hard life and is extremely wise, of the two main protagonists of this series John is the more interesting to play as for me because he produces much wisdom while also being more threatening with his witty dialogue and battle cries compared to his successor. Although the game doesn't actually show you the backstory of John and his gang, it manages to make you understand it and create a mental idea of it through dialogue and in-game hints, so you can clearly understand how John became the man he is and why he grudgingly accepts to hunt down his former bandit pals. In my opinion this games story is more consistent and believable compared to what Redemption 2 gave us, as much as I enjoy that game. As for the gameplay, this game is an absolute blast to play through all the way to 100% completion, I did that 3 times on Xbox 360 and this PC release was the excuse I was waiting for to do it a fourth time. This is another category where Redemption 1 absolutely clears Redemption 2. Unlockable outfits with bonuses, repeatable random encounters and bounty hunts, respawning gang hideouts, social club challenges, more gambling minigames, simplified and more profitable hunting, snappy combat, fame, meaningful honor/dishonor bonuses, safehouses, dueling. You could go on and on about all the awesome stuff this game has to offer, and the fact that everything listed was removed from the sequel is another reason I could never put it on the same pedestal as this game, it was made in a time where Rockstar valued gameplay and player engagement as much as they did the story. This game can certainly feel a little shorter/smaller than other Rockstar games, but that's because it never stretches itself thin. Absolutely everything serves its purpose and is something you will most likely engage with even if you only play through the game once or twice, it's like choosing the smaller apple over the big apple because you know every bite will be way juicier. Calling video games art might be cheesy, but if there's one game that backs that idea up for me it's this one. It's a shame the sequel didn't reach the heights of this one in most regards, but I honestly don't think any game could ever capture lightning in a bottle like this one did. It's one of a kind.

Not a fan of PS exclusives nor did I really care about the 8th gen game library much, but this game is one for the books. One of the best Spider-Man adaptations I've ever witnessed, probably my favourite besides Sam Raimi's trilogy and The Animated Series. The story is sincere, relatable and at times very touching which is a hole in one for a Spider-Man adventure. Really awesome gameplay as well, even if certain parts don't reach the heights of previous games it's pretty much a jack of all trades and sells the Spider-Man fantasy very well which is exactly what the game franchise needed. This game is not perfect but it's certainly an Amazing Spider-Man game (not those Amazing Spider-Man games, we don't talk about them ones).
