L'hébreu biblique nomme יהודי (yehoudi, « judéen ») tout Israélite habitant la Judée6. L'araméen reprit ce mot sous la forme yehoudaïé7, qui devint Ἰουδαῖος [Ioudaîos] en grec ancien8 puis IVDÆVS [jûdæus] en latin9. D'autres ethnonymes désignant les Juifs dans diverses langues contemporaines s'appuient sur cette même étymologie « judéenne », par exemple يهودي [yahûdi] en arabe, Jude en allemand, juutalainen en finnois, Jew en anglais, židov en croate, jøde en danois, zsidó en hongrois, ou Żyd en polonais.
