Hades II does it all, just like Hades I did. Except, well, it's called Hades II not because it's the sequel, but because they managed to fit TWO whole Hades games into it. Twice the environments, twice the bosses, twice the friendly encounters, twice the EM4s!*

*This joke is not original on my part, but it IS true. There's SO MUCH to do!

This is one of the wildest and most interesting games I've ever played - The 2D pixel based world is already an incredible experience, but to add on top one of the most complex and nuanced spell building systems I've ever seen takes it from 'a cool roguelike' to an absolute (yet at times maddening) masterpiece.

Even if you know practically everything there is to know, it's entirely possible you just get "Noita'd" midway through a run. Maybe an enemy picks up a homing giga saw wand, maybe you misplace a spell and blow yourself up, maybe you stumble into a tiny bit of polymorph. Doesn't matter what, every death is a lesson for the next run.

It's not an incredibly complex or deep game. This may be its best aspect: It's simple and enjoyable, but with a surprisingly large variety of content, including quite a few secrets! There is even a surprising amount of endgame with eggs and all of the special characters.

Honestly, even with the price increase, still incredible how much this game pretty much carved out its own little genre

If you get this for cheap (such as in a bundle), I'd say it is worth trying. I definitely wouldn't buy it at full price, my initial play through was around 12 hours, and 2 of that was watching a live action show that (minimally) changes based on your ingame decisions.

I didn't mind the combat, I'd recommend normal just so you don't get bogged down with it and it serves more as a change of pace from the reading. The abilities are simple but effective, nothing life changing or terribly interesting/challenging.

The story is neat, but the decisions are significantly less important than you'd be led to believe. They certainly DO change things, such as characters living or dying, who helps you out and such, some lore, etc, but they don't change the ending in a serious way. I may do a 'flipped' playthrough in the future, but since I got this as part of a bundle (that literally cost the same as this game is by default), I think I'll just accept that 12 hours is a bit short but fine.

Lastly, Lance Reddick was great, if a bit underutilized. I was a bit sad with the amount of buildup his character got, only for (in at least the path I took), it never to really come to anything.

If you haven't played the original Subnautica, I'd recommend that first. If you have played the original, BZ does a huge amount well; It all feels very new and just as mystical as the original, and it adds a few quality of life features that the original could really use. It's definitely much smaller than the original and a bit more repetitive, but I really did enjoy the characters, locations, flora, and fauna.

As with the original, I suggest making use of the EasyCraft Mod which allows the Fabricator to pull from any containers within your seabase and chain-fabricate items as needed on the fly. Not everyone is for this, but it's really nice when building bases or new gear.

I completed the game in around 20 hours, though it's entirely possible you could get much more time out depending on how much you enjoy the exploration and building aspects.

Honestly, it's less of a game than it is an in depth interactive TED Talk. You may have setbacks, sometimes severe, but you will always be making progress, just as a talk will end eventually. What's more important is that you keep listening and learning, rather than you concern yourself with where on the mountain you are.

If you enjoy searching for materials, creating bases, exploring the map, and narrowly avoiding death, this is definitely a game for you. It took me around 40 hours to complete it, but your mileage may heavily vary, especially as I chose to use some quality of life mods and had a friend to push me in the right direction when I wasn't sure where to go.

In general, if you're not sure, the answer is usually deeper.

Not the longest game in the world, but it really is a surprisingly great game for the first game by a studio. Extremely enjoyable, a nice amount of difficulty/complexity for a casual playthrough, and an engaging story.

Take the plunge, I promise it's worth it.

Full game plus collectibles/(coined) Uplay achievements clocked in at just over 7 hours for me, and it's basically a twice distilled Far Cry 3 or 4 experience. If you can get this for relatively cheap or just want a VERY solid taste of the best parts of FC3, I'd highly recommend it.

I'm writing this after finishing the first of the three major regions (Jacob), and I'll most likely update it if/when I'm finished with the whole game.

Overall, this has many of the parts to be a quality game, but between the execution and the way the story interacts with the game, I'm honestly more frustrated or annoyed with it than I find it to be enjoyable. The primary loop is fun: Take out bases, explore, collect stuff, etc.

The massive issue for me is that the game REFUSES to let you just play it! While exploring and working through Jacob's region, I went out of my way not to do story content, because I just wanted to see what the game had to offer. But the story is NON OPTIONAL! Once you hit certain amounts of resistance points, you will be tranq'd and kidnapped for a mission that you didn't ask to do. I think it's intended to feel 'inevitable', but it just feels annoying. You can't even fight off the hunters, and having companions does nothing to stop this. You can even be indoors or somewhere seemingly safe.

Take down a base you stumbled across? Yea, Jacob is going to have a non-negotiable word with you.

Save a bear? Jacob needs to talk to you.

Turn in some baseball cards? Before you even get back to the car, you can hear the song.

I don't really play Far Cry for the story, I don't know anyone who is really that invested. To take a story that's not particularly strong and literally FORCE it upon the player multiple times, it's seemingly deliberately made to be infuriating. And there isn't even some 'special' way to go about these. Looking things up, there is no option to try and outsmart enemies or take a different path: The game is played the way the game wants you to play it. If you take down a key enemy using a sniper, they'll just stand back up: Because the game wants you to be standing 10 feet away for a special cutscene.

The only reason I continue to playing this is because outside of the forced boring story, it's not bad. The weapons are fun, the locale is mundane but enjoyable, and a fair amount of the side quests are humorous or enjoyable for other reasons.

If this isn't updated b late 2020, then you may assume I did not finish the game and as such never updated the review.
