I think I figured out why loud, distorted sounds are funny. Try to imagine a real, non-digital, natural object or creature or circumstance that could make such a noise. What could it possibly be? A hoard of demons devouring the universe? Our cavemen ancestors never evolved to understand the sound of a bass-boosted, poor quality audio file, so the sound is completely incomprehensible to our brains. Because we know it's not dangerous, it becomes funny.
