This is a very good game, and especially for those out there, like me, who feel the charme of a 2.5m guy enclosed in a battletank-like armor wielding an insanely brutal chainsword and a "compact" rocket launcher, dispensing death all around him in the name of a 10000 years old mummified "living Emperor" of mankind.
It's fun, gory, it does all that it need to convey that retro style of a proper boomer shooter, it's fast paced and it's a joy to watch for all the Warhammer 40k fans out there.
I truly love this game and I sincerely hope DLCs and performance improvements here and there will show up soon.
BUT:
- Level design can be frustrating and confusing
- "Purge mode", which is essentially a blood red tinted arena section of each level (and each level can have multiple ones) tanks the overall graphic performance. I swear: even if only one enemy is left, fps drops significantly; as soon as the last guy is butchered, and the level color turns back to normal, the game's performance flies up again. There's something really not optimized there, I suspect.
- Weapons are great but a bit limited. No secondary fire, and that's a bit of a missed opportunity.
- Aiming often feels clunky, with a mouse or with a gamepad. I've used Logitech gamepads and Nimbus but the result is basically the same: more than often you'll end up showering bullets in the general direction of your enemies and hope to correct that with strafing left and right. Also, there is an auto-aim function for joypads, but it does very little in terms of helping you aim at anything: it seems to activate itself only when you are being completely still and already aiming towards the desired foe. Only at that point the crosshair follows the enemy a bit.
- After half of the game is gone, Boltgun tends to repeat itself and there are no new enemies or power-ups. Also, the main character does not improve in any way, there are no rpg-esque aspects, even on the weapons.

- Permormance issues. Now, LET ME SAY IT FIRST: I KNOW I'm playing Boltgun (which is, again, a "boomer shooter" type of game, with very distinct retro graphics) via Windows 11 using Parallels 18 on a beefed-up Apple iMac M1 (16GB Ram, 2TB), still my computer can easily handle a game like TitanFall2 at full detail 1080p with minor stutter here and there. How is it possible that Boltgun is such a hard game to be played decently on my setup? 1080p with "High" settings (not Ultra settings) has it stutter and drop frames like leaves in autumn. Is it so terribly optimized? Particle animations and projectiles give my iMac a really hard time. Parallels is using 6 out of 8 CPU and GPU cores and basically 12GB of RAM on an Apple Silicon chip, which should let me play Boltgun in a smooth way, even if not at "Ultra" detail level. Please, do something to optimize it more. PLEASE.
