Been playing on and off since year 2 of Destiny 1 and there's a good few reasons for the on and off. A lot of the issues I have with the game is Bungie's questionable, brain dead at worst, weapon/subclass tuning, rampant cheating, and content lockout if you don't feel like pumping $15 into the game every 3 months and then $40 whenever a new major DLC releases. Yeah, they'll drip F2P players ways to be on par with P2P players when it comes to loot, story progression, and over all quality of life, but for the most of it you are still paying more than full price at the end of the day.
Now I love the game as a veteran player. The story has always kept me interested, the combat has always been fluid, fun, and always left you feeling like a badass (yes, even with stasis for the most part), and the game is just gorgeous to look at and has beautiful sound design. The story in which you take part in will leave you hooked and if you're looking for more you have the choice to look at the old grimore cards from the first game (or just watch a MyNameisByf video for a more controlled way of understanding), look at the various lore books that you'll collect pieces of over your playtime, or take a closer look at some of your weapons and armor and see some deeper, souls-like, story telling of the different characters you've met along your journey.
The game isn't perfect and I personally don't feel as if the game gives the newest guardians enough world building dialogue so you can understand previous events and where we are now, but if you find the DLCs on sale, can get into the game, and get a few friends together, I think Destiny can be one of the most fun and rewarding games you can play. Just please, for the love of everything, stay away from Trials until Bungie can fix the cheating and poor matchmaking problems.
