It sure is those games! The problem is the game puts in an unfun timer-star mechanic for every single game, so you can't even look at the puzzle for a second without losing stars. Makes me just not want to play it.

For clarification, I originally wrote a review where I gave this game a positive mark but wasn't sure if I enjoyed playing it. After sitting with my thoughts for a while, my opinion has changed.

Spiritfarer has a beautiful story it sets out to tell, don't get me wrong. There's a good message in here. But it is surrounded by gameplay that's so boring it makes me want to tear my hair out, and as I look back on it and think about replaying it with the knowledge I have now, I very much do not want to do that. And I am someone who loves replaying story games! Knowing how it finishes just makes me more excited to see it through. But that story is so tightly wrapped in gameplay that makes me stare at my phone for several minutes because I'm waiting for nonsense to finish that I have no interest in it.

For example, the game is full of a ton of cute animations that usually take a few seconds. They're adorable at the beginning. They're obnoxious an hour in. Like, even just waking up, where you basically have to sleep every night because your ship won't go anywhere at night, has a several second animation that plays every. single. time. You will see this animation probably over a hundred times as you play through the entire game. Harvesting plants? Cutting down logs? Fishing? Which, by the way, has a mechanic not really mentioned in game for catching hard fish that I had to find out on my own. Not to mention that most ways of making materials that you NEED are stuck behind minigames that are so simplistic they feel like they should be in a mobile game. I'm not saying I want to do sudoku every time I chop a log into planks, but it still drives me insane. Not to mention how the characters in game give you items to help with this... and then they're gone so soon that you don't have those extra items when you need them.

Not to mention the characters themselves. Their lore is really interesting! But half that lore is not in the game, and that's frustrating. They're pretty shallow in game. The characters themselves in game don't always explain their relation to you, and you're left confused about why you should care about this random person aside from them being nice. Sometimes they aren't even nice, and you're left with a freeloader on your ship demanding food and fancy housing. In the late game you get a character whom basically just berates you, and when I found out that her questline basically involves a bunch of platforming challenges, I decided to end my game there. Which, by the way, unless you're good at guessing or just sort of intuitive, you're probably going to be looking at the wiki a lot to figure out what you're supposed to do or where to go, or what this character is demanding of you.

Going off mentioned in the last point- the reason why I checked out at platforming? The game has some WEIRD movement. I've heard other people say it's because it's built more with controllers in mind. Which is fine. But if that's the case... just make it a controller only game. Because playing with keyboard is more trouble then it's worth, and I'm not sure if I'd enjoy the movement more with a controller, but the other problems with the game leave me not wanting to see. I can't bring myself to care, because it would be one problem fixed with another problems left to be an issue.

I don't know. It's a cute game, but honestly, maybe it would have been better as an animated series, or even a webcomic. It's a good story, but not really a good game. Towards the end, I skipped every single boat event I could because I found running around the thing unbearable, and I used taxis whenever possible to avoid as much as I could. Other people obviously like it more then I do, and I'm glad for that. I know my opinion here is in the minority. But man, I wish Spiritfarer could have been what I hoped it would be.

It's Stardew Valley! I think everyone's heard of it by now. You farm, you woo people, you fight monsters, you spend 2 hours designing your farmer. I've sunk hundreds of hours into this game across different platforms, and I'll probably sink a lot more into it as time goes on.
