A fantastic time.

I wasn't overly sure I would enjoy this, but I bought it all the same as I like The Witcher, I like Gwent and because of CD Projekt Red's proven track record with delivering first rate, well written stories. They absolutely delivered here.

The gameplay loop is very simple; you wander a map, collect resources and battle in games of Gwent which were all mostly really good fun (The Battle for The Bridge being just amazing) and engage with your comrades in a visual novel which is where you'll be making most of your choices. Where the game really shined for me was in the story and the characters, Queen Meve is an absolute joy and possibly now one of my favourite protagonists in a game. Her story and her overcoming all the betrayal and standing up against a superior force in Nilfgaard was a joy to experience. The rest of your merry band of vengeful badasses are all great too, though I lost some early due to the decisions I made. I'll definitely be replaying to see more of those characters one day.

Towards the end the game I was feeling it was overstaying its welcome just a little, but the ending itself (the one I got anyway) was very satisfying and I'm glad I stuck with it.

If you are a fan of The Witcher world, or just engaging stories with fantastic characters then I can't recommend this enough.

It took about an hour for the game to really get its hooks in me, the first hour is a handholdy tutorial and makes the game feel very barebones however once you break free of it and the map becomes open everything starts coming together. There is a lot to unlock; from various kinds of infantry to tanks and planes plus all manner of abilities for each unit. Plus the unlocks you get from keeping your generals happy, which may force you into playing in different styles for a particular unlock, this is great as it makes you think about your trajectory through the campaign.

The Total War inspired campaign map is great, I have always wanted a WWII Total War and this just about delivers, albeit its a more "casualised" version of Total War however the addition, for me, is very welcome. I love it.

I love the Gurka, Indian and Italian partisan troops. It was very nice to see them represented, as usually in WWII games and indeed entertainment as a whole they're often forgotten about. Their individual battle chatter is great especially the Italians, they're freaking nuts!

I have encountered a few bugs but nothing game breaking or that take me out of the game at all; these have been minor texture and effects issues, Im sure these will be fixed in due course. The audio has been fine for me, its not as "punchy" as COH2s however after messing around with the audio settings and my own I have it to a nicer level than what is by default, now artillery, battle chatter and explosions sound like they should. However I am using headphones so Im not sure if this has anything to do with my initial problems.

This is has been so far a really fun time. It is cheaper elsewhere than Steam, I got it for £30 and its well worth that price tag. If you are bothered by some bugs (and this could be machine dependant; some have it worse than others Im sure) then I would recommend you wait until patch has addressed these issues, otherwise if you want more solid COH action then I say grab it.

Garlic.

An excellent addition to the metroidvania genre. Blasphemous hits all the right notes; from its gorgeous art style and addictive gameplay, to its very interesting world and story. I loved exploring every section and finding all of the games many secrets and quests.

The world is very oppressive and dark, the atmosphere is palpable and it feels like a world in constant misery. It's all done extremely well. This is not a game to play if you want cheering up.

It can be challenging especially early on, though I wouldn't say its unforgiving. The only real thing you will lose is time, but it's easy to pick up and carry on due there being quite a generous number of checkpoints (altars, the games answer to Dark Souls bonfires), and it's fast respawn. Though this does not impede on challenge, there is still plenty of that to go around.

Upgrading and becoming more powerful is the name of the game; once you are fully maxed on health, flasks and fervour (magic) you will be dominating enemies like nobodys business. Bosses however remain a threat, make no mistake.

This game was simply a joy to experience, start to finish I was fully engaged and having the most fun I have had in such a game in a quite long time.

I recommend this to anybody who is looking for a good Metroidvania or souls-like experience.

I am looking forward to seeing where developer takes things for the sequel.

Another excellent addition to the New Blood catalogue.

Back in 1995 when I was around 7, my grandad introduced me to the world of FPS. He and I discovered Heretic together and Heretic became one my favourite FPS games of all time. So imagine my pleasure when I started Amid Evil.

Amid Evil is a excellently made spiritual successor the Heretic/Hexen series, you can tell via playing it was a project of passion for the developers who wanted to honor that series. It feels great to play, looks great and the music is fantastic.

Though I do wish it a darker atmosphere like the games that inspired it, and some of the enemy designs leave a lot to be desired (but who cares when you're blowing them up with miniture planets or having them sucked into Black Holes?) but these are, I suppose, personal and very minor gripes in an otherwise fantastic game.

Do yourself a favour if you enjoy old school or old school style FPS with little to no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
