The fact that this game has been around 20+ years and is still played and gets regular updates and DLC speaks to how good it is. It's a game set in the medieval era where you start from humble beginnings and create an empire over time and then go to war against other players. Seriously the best PC game I've ever played.

There were a couple of things in DE that were a step back from the 2013 HD version. The unranked lobbies no longer have an unranked ELO, so smurfs (people who are experts but play against beginners) can come in and ruin noob games. The 2013 version also had Steam Workshop integrated and it was way more straightforward to mod, whereas this version has an arbitrary gate due to Microsoft being greedy. There were also way more customisable terrains and fun mods like weed bushes in the 2013 version, as well as architecture mods and numerous other graphics mods missing from this version.

However, overall this version is still better. Do yourself a favor and grab this game, it has an extremely steep learning curve but once you get past the initial hurdles it's seriously the best PC game ever. If you wanna speed up your progress, the 2 most important things in this game are build orders (the order you create stuff and build buildings and what number of villagers you assign to each resource), and hotkeys (pressing keyboard shortcuts to go to certain buildings and create units/buildings faster). Master those 2 and you'll start having lots of fun. Also, kinda controversial but I highly recommend you get good enough to beat the Extreme AI on both Arabia and Arena before you step into multiplayer ranked, it'll give you a huge edge over newer players and you'll enjoy this game on a deeper level if you do.

It's a decent Halo substitute since I'm broke and MCC rarely drops its price. I wish it had way more weapons, support for Big Team Battle (8v8 instead of 4v4 max), and vehicles like Halo does. But it might just be a philosophical design preference difference between me and the devs, I've heard they want to focus on the Arena aspects of Halo and I imagine they'd consider vehicles noob-ish or OP and prefer keeping it 4v4 for both cheaper servers and some map design related stuff they'd consider problems. Still, for being free this is an excellent game, just could use more content and polish. This is basically my nicorette gum until I get the Cuban cigar that is Halo Infinite in December.

There is one big problem in this game though. Outside of when you have the rocket launcher, it's basically impossible to win vs multiple opponents due to grenades only being portal-deactivators and doing no damage. Whereas in Halo you can outskill multiple opponents by lobbing frags and/or plasma grenades and outmaneuvering/outplaying them with map knowledge advantage, in Splitgate it can be frustrating and low-IQ gameplay where every shootout basically boils down to who had more teammates to help them. I'm not sure if this is intentional, with the dev's logic being that it encourages teamwork, but it gets mundane after a while and basically punishes you for queuing solo rather than rewarding teamwork. Idk if that makes sense, it's kind of hard to explain.
