Review update: The game had its fair share of issues from the start.
Instead of focusing on the criticism and improving the game, the suits are now trying to turn this into roblox and profit off the work of volunteers.

The AI is still terrible, after all these years. Especially if you have to rely on them in a federation. Why would you even form a federation? The other members will provoke fights and then they can't properly muster a defense or put alliance fleets in one space.

Easy to learn, hard to master - on higher difficulties. I like pretty much everything about the game: the art style, the reactive music, the crafting, ... The game is very addictive and fun, if you don't mind losing characters.

The only complaint that I have is the ending. Without spoiling anything, it was very obvious for me where the story was going, but there is nothing in the game to change the outcome. I would have loved to find a secret path for another ending. The story is very thin as well, but I didn't mind that.

This is an early access review. As of now, I am refunding the game, because of some serious nuisances: I have played the prologue (for free) and liked it, but I died at the boss fight. Now with the paid game, I couldn't even get to the boss of the prologue, because of terrible difficulty randomness. When you die, you start at the last save point. Which, in the case of the prologue, is basically at the start of the prologue. You cannot save in between and are forced you replay the whole thing.

I want to like the game, but unless they change the checkpoint system I won't be buying it again. I'm also not a big fan of the combat mechanics. It's turn based, which is fine, but that means that you are often running away from enemies until your spell cooldown is gone, then cast a spell and repeat. It feels silly. It's even worse if you flee from combat to heal. Healing potions seem rare (if they even exist), so you run in circles (to waste turns) until you are healed up.

I bought it because it received steam's Most Innovative Gameplay Award and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive at this time.
Played it for 1.5 hours and returned it. It's a fun little game, it has good music and nice gameplay like you are playing a John Woo action movie without the slow parts.
It does not have The Most Innovative Gameplay though. At most, it's yet another platformer with some new tricks.

Mutant Year Zero often gets compared to XCOM and since I have a few hundred hours spent in XCOM, I'd like to compare them as well but also tell you what's better or worse in my opinion.

+ The combat system is blatantly ripped off of XCOM and that's a good thing in my opinion. Low-cover, high-cover, overwatch, 2 actions per character, etc. An easy entry for XCOM veterans.
+ MYZ adds a new mechanic though: The transition between exploration mode (where you can easily move around and position yourself for an attack) and the tactical combat. I like that a lot!
+ The mission areas are not randomly generated, but beautifully crafted around different themes.
+ The world is based on a pen & paper RPG and has a very atmospheric setting and charismatic characters. It feels a lot like “Wasteland 2” to me.
+ The infamous hit chances of XCOM seem less harsh in this game. I have often enough landed a 50% hit. 75% hits are pretty reliable.

~ Weapon attachments and attachment slots are fewer than in XCOM. Personally, I'm ok with that.
~ To change attachments, you have to travel back to the base, which I found a bit immersion breaking and unnecessary, since you can change everything else by simply being outside of combat.

- The skill trees aren't so great. Every character has 1 or 2 defining skills (mutations) that make them unique. Many of the skills are passive, so you'll rarely notice them and rather mostly find yourself shooting stuff, only using some skills in between.

- The mission areas are not randomly generated, which means you'll learn every detail of them fast.
- Enemies do not respawn, so once you have cleared everything there is literally nothing left to do.
- Together, this leads to a very low replay-value. Though, I have played it twice to completion.

A word about the difficulty: Some people complain that the game is too hard, I'd argue the opposite: If you can remain undetected, kill 1 or 2 enemies silently and clear all roamers before you engage a bigger group, even on highest difficulty, it becomes a walk in the park. If you don't like sneaky breeki style, you should probably lower the difficulty or get a different game.

Summary: Get it, if you like sneaky XCOM or Wasteland 2. Don't expect a full XCOM-like experience though. Also don't expect a huge game that you can keep playing for weeks.

I usually don't buy content before it is released and I bought this game on a sale, but I'm looking forward to the next story DLC, which I have already bought. Don't disappoint me, bearded ladies!

"One of the best-written RPGs in years" - 9.4/10 - IGN

Hold on! Shouldn't that title go to The Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate or Divinity 2? I honestly wouldn't even call this game an RPG. Sure it has RPG elements, but to me it's first and foremost a card game with some story telling on top.

You play as Queen Meve who has to gather support and resources to take back her kingdom from Nilfgaardian invaders. As the queen you have to make tough decisions regarding the hardships of the common folk and you have to weigh individual characters and how they could benefit your cause. These decisions and the events of the story build your card deck.

There is not much bad to say about this game. I was pleasantly surprised about the length of the game. The music and 2D graphics are nice. The voice-over storytelling is well done. I wholeheartedly recommend Thronebreaker, if you take it for what it is: Gwent with a story.

EVE is one of the best games I have ever played. It's very unique in today's world of AAA games that copy each other and today's world of MMOs that copy WoW. It also has spaceships, which is kind of a big point of the game and my favorite part. There is currently no other game like it and there won't be, for quite some time.

EVE is not for everyone though. Over the years, thousands have picked it up and dropped it shortly after. Many just can't get into it. You'll have to see for yourself.

Now start it, it's free to try after all! Get in your spaceship, enjoy the beautiful views and see if EVE is for you. You chose one of the 4 races (all are equally viable) and get your first spaceship. You will be able to fly frigates and other small ships, up to the cruiser class. That's enough variety to test the waters and see if EVE suits you, or scares you.

Pro tip: Don't get attached to your stuff. You will lose it in some way or another. Live, learn and keep going!

Pro:
  • It's beatiful
  • It's a big sandbox
  • The possibilities are near endless
  • It's thousands of people playing on the same server, no instances, no regional servers (except for our Chinese bros)
  • It has hundreds of people enganging in PVP regularly, occasionally battles between thousands
  • The community can be the best

Contra:
  • It's huge, it's complex, it's hard to grasp
  • It's a big sandbox where people might piss in your sand and laugh about it
  • It can be boring, if you let it (don't let people tell you to mine, only do it if you want)
  • The game is only what you make it, it doesn't hold your hand and guide you
  • The community can be the worst

The long version:
I started playing EVE in 2003. Now, 13 years and 5888 in-game hours later, I can probably write a review about it. Let me tell you a bit about the world as it was 13 years ago: We had only few games; We had Half Life and some of its mods that are known as proper games today (CS, TF); We had Starcraft, Homeworld, Deus Ex and Diablo II.

What we didn't have back then was WoW (It surfaced only in 2004). Life was good.

Naturally EVE is not a WoW clone and it's, in fact, very different to WoW and its clones. I wouldn't even call it an MMORPG. EVE is a Massive Multiplayer Online Space Ship Simulator. You are not really role-playing a person there. You are flying ships and most of the time you will see yourself as the ship you are flying.

This is unfortunate as some people would like to be more in-character with the pilot. Doing that is still possible when you are in a station in your captain's quarters, but it is a very limited experience. Most of the time you will be looking at glorious spaceships. EVE does have one of the best character creators though!

Despite its age, EVE is beatiful! The graphics and the rendering engine got updated multiple times during its long existance.

EVE is in many ways unique and will still be for a long time. Even contenders like Star Citizen won't change that in the foreseeable future. Here is why:
  • All EVE players play on the same server in the same instance.
  • Everything happens inside one universe. Your actions have the potential to affect many others.
  • The whole market is player driven, mining and industry is done by players. Things are not held together by game logic and seeded markets.
  • The galactic conflicts are player driven and have been for 13 years now. Alliances of players from all over the world fight for their claim.
  • The server can support hundreds of players in one system simultaneously. Something that other games are still struggling with.

That's it. Try it out!
