120 hours later, I've finished it (one ending only, I'm not Gabe). What an excellent game!

It could be better technically (especially some crashes in the final sequence), but there's so much care, attention, heart, SOUL, poured into the world and character design that I gladly overlook occasional issues. Exploring the Zone is an addictive blast, there are mini-stories that you continue to come across even a hundred hours into the game, each region is unique in its own way, and it all looks and sounds amazing.

The story missions are surprisingly good, and the story itself is appropriately dramatic and cryptic. Always a sense of more going on, character motivations are never transparent, a few good surprises along the way, and much weight to what's happening. I tend to dislike stories in games, but this one is a good backdrop to exploring the Zone.

Highly recommended, and I'll be back when the DLC is out!

PS I used a weight mod, and a mod to loot mutants, so this is not exactly “vanilla”.

Enjoyed this, the exploration is top-notch, requiring attention to surroundings. The battle system is also cool, it lets you experiment with some interesting combinations, though I felt that about mid-game I found the tactics that “just work” and somewhat lost interest (they may be overturned later, but I got distracted by other games for now :)). Throw in some funny jokes and interactions between characters — and it is a good experience overall.

I shouldn't have slept so long on this great game.

Great game, with engaging game-play, the graphics that held up very well. Though collecting all the side-activities can get Ubi-style-repetitive very quick, so I recommend focusing on the main mission (and go for occasional distraction here and there, but don't chase them). The main story is the usual collage of “suddenly, yet another super-villain abducts yet another friend of Batman!”, but it is all over-the-top dramatic and heroic in the most enjoyable way. Plus, I loved the MAIN twist with your REAL sidekick, *wink wink*, which comes very early and stays entertaining till the end.

Really good game, both graphics and gameplay-wise. The campaign doesn't escalate quickly enough for me (a lot of same enemies, new ones added very gradually), but the levels themselves are great, with variety of navigational puzzles, and plenty of doom-like encounters and secrets (OG Doom, I mean).

It does feel like I'm still playing the very same game that I enjoyed 30 years ago, but that's not a bad thing at all.

Fun and beautiful (nice tech showcase!), but it gets repetitive fairly quick. It is impressive how much effort went into designing hub areas, they are very detailed… but no gameplay happens in them.

Feels like a mix of God of War and Tomb Raider, with a hint of Soul Reaver. The story will fit the back of a napkin, but introduces a handful of cool characters. The fighting system is REALLY good, when the game allows you to use it… but it also includes lots of puzzles, simple but getting tedious over time.

Still, a cool and a fairly short game. I hear the sequels all change up their genre, so it'll be interesting to check them out too.

A solid "meh" that somebody may enjoy, but I feel like I'm forcing myself to continue.

Combat looks very fun, engaging, and with lots of variety. Kudos to whoever designed it. The rest just seems very bland, but high-quality-bland.

So — you may like it. I didn't, but I can't recommend against it either.

Expectations exceeded. I suspected my love for the original to be nostalgia-tinted, but this amazing remake shows what a great game System Shock was and is. The new: updated graphics, improved controls, quality sound, were all respectfully combined with the old: gameplay, level design, atmosphere.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this game!

Yes, the ending, it's odd, but so what. 3 weird minutes out of hours and hours of excellence. I'll take it :)

PS I finally figured out why I couldn't get to Security in the original, ages ago. Blatant spoiler: Write down the numbers in CPU node rooms. You are welcome.

Awesome game, even for a new player in 2023. Combines the tension of patiently waiting for the enemies to make a wrong move, and the excitement of quick deadly fights.

And the sound design is *chef's kiss*, I've never played a game with such informative soundscape and with precise positioning. I've played games with more atmospheric sound (Elite: Dangerous, Hell Let Loose), but here sound is a tool, often lethal.

PS To nitpick, I wish they improved the Screen Space Reflection, with so much water in the game the current SSR is cheap and annoying :(

PPS Updating in Nov 2024, the 1896 update improved the graphics and atmosphere, introduced an incredible new map, but the UI is unfortunately an incorrigible mess, and the game stability went downhill… but it's still the only game in the genre that I feel is worth of my time.
PPPS Update in Nov 2025, still playing, still great, no other games like this.
