This game is as close to Ace Combat as you can get. Even from the earliest alpha days of the kickstarter it was clear that this was a passion project. PW basically packs a traditional Ace Combat story, the same types of planes, special weapons and ridiculous amounts of ammo into an indie title that is worthy of being held in the same light as any AC game. The voice acting, soundtrack and game play are all top tier and if you like Ace Combat at all, this is definitely worth a try. The HUD and UI in game will immediately be familiar to anyone who's played any Ace Combat games for the last 15 years, why change what isn't broken?

What sets this apart from Ace Combat one might ask? Well, one may think "Well, the planes already hold almost a hundred thousand pounds of ammunition, so what could possibly be more ridiculous than that?". Well, add on another hundred thousand pounds. Unlike AC where you choose one special weapon to take with you in tandem with your standard missiles, depending on the plane you can take up to THREE other weapons with you. It isn't out of the realm of possibility to have a plane that has Standard Missiles, MLAA missiles for clearing clusters of air targets, an unguided bomb or a MGAA lock-on missile to take care of ground targets and even some kind of extra missiles, another type of missile, or a gun pod. That means your "multi-role" designated aircraft can actually be that, Multi-role. You can effectively do the jobs that need done without being tedious.

I have yet to encounter any bugs. The only things I saw were extremely minor issues like some of the sentences not having a space or something but that's such a minor inconvenience it almost wasn't worth mentioning.

What else? This game does away with the Ultra High G turns so if you were tired of the whole "Post Stall Maneuver" nonsense of Ace Combat, you don't have to worry about that here. It's true to the form Ace Combat with the difficulty of Ace Combat 5 (no checkpoints anyone?) so those who believed the newer games were "too easy" can have their challenge back.

All in all, RB-2D took what made Ace Combat great, did away with some of the fluff, improved on some other aspects, packaged it up and delivered it as Project Wingman. There's even enough literary freedom in the story to build up and even expand upon the universe he's trying to create in the "After Cataclysm" era. This man deserves your money. Give it to him.

5 years after the game came out of patreon level early access I can say that it is much improved. The sound quality has improved markedly, which in my previous review was a personal gripe but still. The movement controller appears to have changed and now that the community is there the teamwork issue seems much more mitigated. There are still instances where your squad/team doesn't work together but that's the same in virtually all games like this. It happens. They also added your standard options such as ADS speed.

All in all the game has evolved into something worth playing.

Original Review: I don't know what to say about this. It isn't.... bad. But at the same token, it's not fun. It's too hard to see people in this game. And yes, I've played many realistic shooters such as project reality, squad, post scriptum, Red Orchestra, Rising Storm 2 and others and this just doesn't feel right. The movement is very clunky and the gun handling mechanics are disgusting. There isn't even a slider to adjust your sensitivity while ADS, which with how fast it moves in this game is almost a necessity.

The game doesn't promote teamwork very well either. One shouldn't have to join a clan in order to find good teamwork. It's something that should just naturally happen. It's almost like it's an afterthought in this game. I wanted to like this game, otherwise I Wouldn't have bought it, but In the time I played I didn't find any moments where I had FUN. Frustration, sure. Admiring some of the scenery, sure. Occasionally picking off some sap that was running around alone, okay. But that's it.

Also, the low quality sounds make it difficult to stay immersed, but that's a personal gripe. At the current stage in development I can't recommend this.

Honestly, it's a pretty decent game. If you come into this game thinking you're going to get FFT level story, character depth, graphics and complex plots, you won't. So if that's what you're looking for you might be disappointed. But if you come in with an open mind and just want a nice tactical RPG with what I consider (yes I, this is MY OPINION. Make your own) decent characters and from what I experienced so far, a decent story then you'll have a good time. The battles aren't pushover easy and if they are you can customize your difficulty (yes, you can choose parts to make harder or easier).

Give it a try. It's not abhorrently expensive.

Read every review. There's nothing more that can be said about this game. I haven't even started playing around with Mods or anything yet but I have about 75 hours in as of this review and I still haven't completed the game. You will easily get far more than your money's worth if you are into a game that challenges you, instead of just being there for general entertainment.

This game is amazing. Through cel-shaded visuals they somehow manage to capture the horror of war without being overly violent and gorey. Starting with a group of militiamen, which are only citizens who were called to take up arms; a good portion of them being under 18 years of age (Oscar is 15, to put it into perspective), you fight battles that the army deems (without explicitely stating it, but you start to realize it as your characters would) too dangerous or trivial to send their own troops to do themselves (normally, these 'trivial' battles involve throwing your people in front of tanks or machine guns to "clear the way" for the actual army, something that would usually encur high casualties) because to the army General, you're expendable and nothing but peasants and farmhands and he's not far off. While the General believes himself to be Aristocratic, your group in Squad 7 is anything but. Welkin, the main character was going to school to be a teacher despite being the son of a warhero General himself. Alicia was just a baker, Oscar, who is 15 wants to protect his sick brother. You have people in your group who were in EWI (European War I), a girl who was a magazine model, outcasts, students, a singer, all just normal people which put into perspective that you're not leading a group of battle-hardened soldiers into war, but a group of everyday people who just want to protect their homes.

The game starts off lighthearted enough but quickly ramps up in ambience when Imperial troops start shooting civilians while running away. The battlezones start colorful and bright but quickly shift to bleak trench filled warzones where you start jumping into trenches and getting down and dirty using your Shocktroopers against enemy entrenched troops with flamethrowers, hand grenades and sometimes just sheer luck all the while dodging mortars flying around and machine gun/cannon emplacements you have to keep out of the line of fire of, it gives you a sense of satisfying trench warfare that even top FPS games can't match (and this is a turn-based RTS RPG game).

That is evident when the game puts your in its own version of a Normandy-like beach landing where you have to capture a beachhead from the Empire and get past machine gun bunkers on the cliffside that will tear any soldiers that enter their line of fire to pieces with no chance of getting to cover. After that, you go up the hill where tanks are waiting and foot soldiers, past them you enter trench fighting, where you then run down another killzone with machine gun bunkers to make it to their beachhead base where they have soldiers and tanks waiting for you. Well Squad 7, time to get to work. What drives it home more is throughout the game you unlock chapters focusing on specific characters to see the more human side to them, and on more than one occasion your people raise the fact that the missions they are about to undertake has a high chance to get them killed, a far cry from your "Oh what, we have to run through a burning building, scale a mountain and survive a nuke? No problem" FPS-like super soldiers.

It's a story about war, love, betrayal, loss AND it has satisfying combat and appropriate challenge? 10/10, would recommend to anyone.
