Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from, because I have a lot of nice things to say.

So I was following Brighter Shores a bit before this release, anxiously awaiting when I'd get to try it since I wasn't part of any of the betas. I was looking forward to a Runescape-like experience of raising various skills and exploring with a more modern engine/graphical look. I knew Andrew Gower founded the original RS with his brother and a bit of the story, so I was hopeful that some of the things that made RS interesting would make their way here.

The reality however, is the game is actually quite different than I expected, and not in a bad way at all. It doesn't feel quite like RS, but more like a very interactive adventure game or something similar to Animal crossing or Harvest Moon for me. Except instead of having a farmstead, you're doing lots of gathering and farming tasks to achieve your goals. There's no quest every 5 seconds for everything you do, but you'll be working on a quest and realize "Oh hey, I need to level my fishing up to catch a fish I need for this quest" and then you'll go on a bit of a tangent of discoveries and find some other stuff along the way. There's maybe 10-15 minutes of tutorial stuff at the very beginning before you're free to go wander around and do what you want. But ultimately your goal is to complete quests, raise your levels across different profession activities, and then advance the main story when your total level is high enough.

I read some reviews complaining about how the UI was bad? but it's very clean with a bit of stylized look, and the map is actually amazingly detailed and nice, I can tell someone put a lot of work into it like a colourful handrawn map on grid paper, I really really like it.

Quest wise like others have said there's some amusing dialog with a few things that actually made me laugh out loud. Absolutely every creature and object seems to have an 'info card' with some flavortext about it that you can view. There's a lot of unnecessary details that really show a level of passion was put into making this.

Most professions have some associated tools that you'll have to buy from shops to gather certain materials, if money is a problem don't be like me and grind monsters or sell potions. Go try out the cooking skill at the restaurant, it's both easy, fun and familiarizes you with different NPCs and different resources you'll use to make different dishes, while making you some easy money.

After playing for awhile tonight, I've made it to the second 'Episode' but I still have quests I'd like to finish in the episode 1 area and will probably do that before advancing too much further since I'm invested. Which brings me to one final point, which is:

The game is episodic in nature, which is to say that you'll end up on a big map with things to gather, NPCs to talk to, quests to do, monsters to fight, that its looking like will be unique to that map, or that 'Episode' with new or similar skills you'll have to raise while you're there, effectively giving you a kind of 'reset' but in a creative way. Your weapons and armor gathered in the first episode can still be used, but you'll be painfully weak compared to how you were until you find some new equipment in that zone, or are able to 'tune' equipment to that episode's 'Obelisk' . Don't worry too much about it, because you aren't really starting over or anything, you keep all of your levels and stepping into the previous episode's areas you'll be just as strong as you were. But be prepared to learn new skills and make new discoveries in each new Episode/Zone.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised, and although I was ready to close out during the tutorial because I was unsure what the game was, I'm glad I stuck it out because after 8 hours I have a huge appreciation for it and the colourful diorama graphical style. This is definitely a good game and will be recognized as such over time.

I wanted to like this, and was kinda intrigued with the smooth animations and the characters having random weird voiceclips. A 2D diablo of sorts. But man, that class select screen really turns me off of the whole thing. I had to double check if this was a free to play game with microtransactions, but no, it's paid. You buy the game, and then you see a wall of characters marked 'EXCLUSIVE' with a store link. Not even like 99 cent DLC, like $7 DLC per. What the ♥♥♥♥ man, You buy a game then have a bunch of microtransactions dangled in front of you, and most of them clash with the base theme of the game. Kinda killed my interest

Oh sure, at a glance it's just 2D Minecraft, but once you get into the nitty gritty, there is so much content. It's just a 'make your own goals' sort of design game, though you can absolutely do that. There's bosses to fight, tons of equipment to play around with, quite a bit of strategic depth I wasn't expecting, and really really extensive engineering stuff. I've been having a lot of fun with it with friends.

Had a great time on the free weekend. If you're on the fence about this game here's what you can expect:

-Fast paced large scale medieval battles with an upwards of 32 players at a time, (Sometimes more)
-A wide assortment of weapons with different power, reach, and statistics
-Melee combat is awesome, You have 4 different swings, some are faster or stronger, all of them are useful. There is also a feint you can use with any swing to fake out opponents.
-In Large scale battles you'd be surprised how many small scale localized fights break out, the winner of a duel will survive to assist his allies. You really need to see it for yourself.
-There is a fair bit of strategic depth, A knight wielding a greatsword in a narrow corridor won't be able to swing in wide arcs without hitting the wall, and is reduced to overhead swings and stabs, If you like stabbing weapons or spears, you can totally use that kind of combat and terrain to your advantage.
-Battlecries, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. People are literally screaming 24/7 while running out of the spawn when the map starts and it is GLORIOUS.

If you see Chivalry on sale, do yourself a favor and support this great game and its noble creators.

Probably one of my best experiences in working with large teams of people. Some of the best half-and-half battles happen on payload and capture point maps. There's a great community and you don't have to be good at first person shooters to get any enjoyment or help out your team.

Engineers construct buildings to support their team and defend bases, generally staying safe behind friendly lines, a great class for beginners with plenty of room for growth.

Medics are the supporting healers of the team, they play the role of patching up team mates and breaking through key points and map objectives through making themselves, and their team invulnerable. another great class to play from the getgo as they are extremely helpful and fairly easy to learn.

Heavies are the 'Tanks' and backbone of the front line, often paired with medics they boast the strongest firepower and damage of any class in close quarters. Although slow they're invaluable to the team and excel at destroying sentry outposts and holding the line. Also a great class to play together with friends.

Demomen are Mid/long range bombadiers, they're a support class that requires careful aim, precision and timing. Armed with sticky bombs, they can set remote detonated traps for defense or as a sneaky trap. They're also known for their secondary 'Demoknight' loadout that consists of a sword and shield with a charge mechanic that lets you behead your enemies.

Soldiers are a front line class with mid range health a long range rocket launcher. (Although its often used mid/close range) They work well with medics and can pelt enemies with rockets before they come close enough to matter.
By jump, crouching and firing at the same time, they can perform a 'rocket jump' to reach high places, or rain explosive death from the skies.

Snipers are the traditional long range assassins nose deep in their scope looking for unsuspecting prey to wander into their sights. They excel at picking off other classes from a safe distance, (usually heavies) With steady fingers they can turn the tide of a battle from the safety of the back lines, protecting their team mates from threats they never even saw coming.

The Pyro is a front line/Support class that serves a variety of uses. They wield flamethrowers and set their enemies ablaze, dealing siginificant afterburn damage finishing off fleeing targets with ease. They're great team players that can fit in both the front and back line by pairing up with medicsto push a point, or buddy up with an engineer and protect their allied buildings from rockets, grenades, spies and sappers. They're a jack of all trades with plenty of help to give.

Scouts are a light on their feet (literally) run and gun class that can double, sometimes triple jump and get into all sorts of crazy places. Their primary role is to capture points and objectives while escaping from danger. They're fragile but very capable of going toe to toe with most classes, but remember, when playing scout it's fight or flight, if you're outnumbered pick flight and come back with friends.

Spies are french gentlemen who's primary purpose is to destroy engineer buildings and assassinate snipers. An advanced class that's not for the faint of heart, they posess the ability to disguise themselves as a member of the enemy team, as well as become temporarily invisible in order to get close to their target. When the time is right they unsheathe their butterfly knives for a quick, and hopefully silent kill. They're a support class that lives behind enemy lines, stealthily clearing a path for their team mates advance through trickery and deception.

Heavy learning curve to get good, but probably one of the easier fighters to get into. Lots of fun characters and a pretty large competitive community, Finding matches is very fast too.
