It's hard to say much about this game that hasn't been said by a legion of people before me. Capcom struck gold with the first game of this series, and this remake just enhances that game. I'm not normally an advocate for a remake replacing an original game, but this is one of my exceptions to that rule.

Instead of boring you with a million praises of this game that you've undoubtedly already read, i'd like to give you a heads up. The game kept crashing on my PC and none of the fixes listed on here in the forums or guides worked for me. If you play this game and read this first I recommend playing the game in windowed mode. After I did this I no longer had any crashes. Hopefully you won't have to suffer like I did and redo the first hour of game play over a few times trying to see if you fixed the crashing error.

The epitome of Max Payne is right here in Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne.

The second entry in this series is quite possibly one of the best games that has ever and will ever be made. I know that's a bold statement, and that's exactly why I used it.

The game play from the first game has been refined and made even better in a myriad of ways. First off, bullet time from dodging no longer takes up your regular bullet time meter. A huge improvement over the first game is that as long as you don't let go of the trigger, Max will stay on the ground after a dodge and not get up till you either quit shooting or he runs dry and has to reload. So many times in the first game I would be killed by the recovery animations from doing the bullet time dives that I quit using them. The fact that the devs changed it shows they felt the same way to some extent. This sounds like a little thing but if you know you know. You also get the different weapon types much faster in this one, which makes the game much more fun than the first game.

I'll admit that Max doesn't drop as many one liners in this game, but the story is stronger as a trade off. Personally I thought the story in this game was much more nuanced than the first game. The first game is a simple and sweet story of revenge. There's nothing wrong with that but I found the personal story of Max and him questioning his allegiances and sanity much more poignant and it struck more of a chord with me.

Everything about this game oozes sleaze, style, and the noir feeling you get from films like Blood Simple and China Town. The devs wanted to make a cinematic game akin to noir movies. They succeeded and then some with this game. It's like Remedy made the ambrosia of video games here. If you liked the first game, or are new to the series, check this game out. I walked away with it being in my top 10 list, and I am a picky bastard.

A seriously amazing and underrated game.

You will need a frame limiter to play this game or it will have you sliding and sticking to everything. You also need to install a few patches to even get it to run. It's worth it, but just a heads up.

Resident Evil for the Outlast generation. Played through this game just because my brother bought me pizza to bribe me into playing it. The pizza was fire, the game was not.

Thymesia is marketed as a souls-like with a flavor of it's own. I think that sells the game quite short of what it really is though. Thymesia is much more than a souls-like, and for the price it is set at, it's worth every dollar even not on sale.

First off, i'd like to say that this game is more Sekiro than Dark Souls. The parry mechanic in this game is very reminiscent of Sekiro, This is a great thing since I feel like souls clones are incredibly overdone and often I find that they fall flat. Instead of another bog standard dodge roll affair, this game encourages you to parry the opponents chain attacks till you get an opening and break their guards and inflict wounds damage. I found this super satisfying and snappy to my inputs. It's always a toss up for these types of games to have sluggish controls and I am glad to say that Thymesia has super responsive controls.

I'd like to go a little more in detail on the way this game works. There is a system in this game called "wounds". This acts like an armor bar on the monster's HP bar that defends their real HP from being hurt till the wounds bar is depleted and has some of the real HP bar exposed. People seem to have a huge problem with this going by some of the reviews I have seen. I'm not sure why this is such a big problem when I was able to easily adapt to this in an hour or so. I'll admit at first it kind of had me scratching my head, but it is there for a reason. The devs want you to parry and switch up your attacks to deplete that bar. If you just brute force the enemies then that bar goes down incredibly slowly. On the other hand, if you parry the enemies and use your plague weapons, this bar goes away incredibly quickly. This is another reason I feel like this game leans way more into the Sekiro side of things. The devs constantly encourage you to learn the parry timings with stuff like this and I welcome it wholeheartedly.

The combat for this game was pretty fun to me. Your basic attacks are with a saber. Think more of a pirate's saber instead of a long sword or broadsword. This is your quick attack and what you'll use inbetween the enemies attack chains as you weave in and out of the combat. There's not too much to this combat wise, but it does exactly what it needs to do. You also have a heavy attack, where Corvus will transform one of his hands into a talon and hit the enemy for massive HP damage. You also have a nice little system called plague weapons. These are weapons that the enemies you fought drop, and these act as sort of like the magic of the game. They consume energy to use but they are usually quite good. The majority of your time in this game will have you weaving your light attacks in between the enemies attacks as you dodge and parry through their attack chains. The key is learning the enemy well enough that you know which type of attack to use when and what you can get away with. I really enjoyed this game a ton for this aspect and found the controls incredibly responsive. This game quite possibly has some of the most responsive controls of any soul-like game I have ever played. It actually blew me away how fluid everything in this game felt.

The sight and sound in this game is great. Keep in mind that this is a 25 dollar indie game. With that in mind, the graphical quality of everything is actually quite impressive. The main character is a beauty, and I love everything about his design. Kudos to whoever was in charge of making us a plague doctor as a protagonist in a game as enjoyable as this. The enemies range from alright to actually quite good looking aesthetically. This isn't to say that some of the enemies are bad looking, but that they get the job done and that's it. There's only so much you can do with crazed villagers. On the other hand some of the beefier enemies are really good looking aesthetically. There are some roaming knights about and I love their armor. It makes me wish we could see them a little more instead of just having them want to kill us. I especially love the look of the great sword elite knights. They are absolutely awe inspiring and even in the decayed state we find them exude a sense of honor and grace.

The levels in general are no slouch either when it comes to how they please the eyes. Every area I went to in this game was distinct, with a ton of stuff that my eyes loved. We have to keep in mind though that there are only 4 levels in this game. That sounds quite dismal, but they really are quite long the first time through. I'd also like to point out that, besides the main story taking you through each one of these levels, you will have access to sub-missions. These are missions in those same areas that can have you doing different activities other than killing the boss of this area. These are worth doing as they unlock previously locked parts of the map and half the bosses of the game are locked behind these. They may be optional, but these sub-missions are actually quite enjoyable and make up a ton of the playtime you will see attached to this review.

The music for this game is pretty good. Each boss has their own theme, and most of the areas have a nice motif to them. Once again this was something that I really appreciated for a game as cheap as this. I have gotten used to cheaper games reusing music a ton, and I was happy to see this was kept to an absolute minimum here. The enemy sound design is great as well. Each enemy usually has a sound cue for you to know what attack they are about to do even if you can't see them on your screen at the time. This is super welcome and something I think more games should adopt. It behooves you to let the player feel like they didn't get hit by something cheap that they had no idea was coming.

For a 25 dollar game, Thymesia is a stand out and an accomplishment in the indie game scene. The devs responded to players when they pointed out some flaws from the demo and actually fixed a ton of the issues that I and plenty of others had with the demo.

A seriously impressive game.

The hotly anticipated sequel to the hit game Two Worlds! If you're a eurojank fan you'll find a lot to love here and if you've played the original game you'll see a huge jump in quality all across the board.

This game's story starts awhile after the first game. Somehow Gandohar from the first game has you and your sister trapped in a castle and is using your life source to keep her alive. Shortly after being shown all that you are freed by a group of orcs who work for a mysterious prophet character. This is basically how Two Worlds 2 starts and gets you into the world so you can start killing everything you see and looting every chest you come across. It's not a bad set up, and compared to the first game this could be seen as an amazing jump in story telling. I won't go too much more into detail of the story, since that's not what you're here for. I will say it's a pretty decent story, with a few plot holes in there that will require you to gloss over to fully enjoy it.

Let's go over something else that goes hand in hand with the story. This game has amazing voice acting. Not in the quality of the voice acting, but in some of the lines the characters will say and how deadpan a lot of the conversations are. The main character rivals JC Denton from Deus Ex for his emotionless dialogue. This is as funny as that game, and I really enjoyed every time my character said something witty to someone or told someone off. The rest of the characters in the game range from good to bad. Not dreadfully bad, but some of the characters, mostly one off NPCs in quests, don't fit their character or are a little too cartoonish. All in all though I really liked the voice work for this game and wish more games had dialogue as funny as this game.

While the voice work was a little all over the place, the music for this game is a completely different story. Every single track in this game is an absolute banger. If you've played any amount of games you've probably heard the stereotypical desert theme. Well, this game is ready to wow you with an absolutely fresh desert theme that will make your ears happy. This should really come as no surprise though, as the first game was no slouch when it came to music either. I can safely say that if you like high fantasy music in RPGs like this, you'll be very happy with what the devs have to offer with this game.

The game play of this game is pretty good if you are a fan of Gothic or Risen. It's more of an RPG in the style of those games than something more western. The game, for the most part, lets you do what you want in an area in the order that you want to do it. This means you can go to a higher leveled area at your own risk and do the quests there if you can survive. I personally love this type of freedom in an RPG and wish more devs would try this. You shouldn't be afraid to let the player have a little fun and get his butt smacked. The quests are actually a little more interesting than go to x and kill x. Now, don't get me wrong, most of the quests are like that, but this game has some interesting ones that go outside the box for an RPG and those really do a great job of breaking up the repetition.

Combat boils down to you having a few skills, which you find and start to learn by finding skill books, and having them hot keyed to a few keys on your keyboard. Unfortunately it becomes clear very quickly that not all skills are made equal, and you should probably find out what skills are top dog and which shouldn't have made the cut. Your leveling up system is pretty standard, with every level giving you 4 points to put into Strength, Vitality, Dexterity, or Magic. In addition to these points you get 2 talent points per level to drop into whatever skills you are trying to level up for your particular run. This is pretty simple but i'd like to give you a little bit of advice. Do not try to make a hybrid character in this game. You need to go all in on a certain play style to get any meaningful power progression in this game. Now, if you're reading this and have already been hybridizing it up, no worries. The respec system of this game is easy. You should go and find a memory wiper, and spend 500 gold to reset all your skill points and attribute points. This game has my respect for making respeccing incredibly easy. I find way too many games have no such system or like to hid it away for no good reason. That always discourages me from experimenting, and I love that this game lets you mess around to your heart's content.

This game is broken. This game is also incredibly janky. I like to consider those as some of the game's ultimate strengths and appealing factors instead of flaws. It's not often I play a game that I have fun with by absolutely breaking it over my knee in a way you can't tell if the devs intended it to or not.

A seriously underrated game.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is a game that people will lead you to believe is a hidden gem. A game that stands the test of time and is still amazing to this day. I'd like to be able to agree with these people, but I just didn't find that to be the case.

The combat for this game is alright. It's a little more involved than something like The Elder Scrolls, since it has a few moves you can unlock. It also has a kick, which seems to be the main thing, and quite possibly one of the only things people bring up when they praise this game. Sure, it's cool that you can kick enemies into fire, spikes, and off cliffs, but at the end of the day this gets pretty samey and not that fun once you've done it for the hundredth time. I'll admit though that being able to use the environment by throwing objects and breaking stuff to cause objects to fall on enemies is pretty cool.

Another huge problem this game has is that every single action in this game feels incredibly delayed. Every time you switch your weapon, your character will do a flourish before your weapon is usable. This is cool the first few times but it quickly becomes old and just grating. Quick switching is out of the question with this being a thing. Half the time, while blocking, the enemy attacks go through your shield anyways. This may be intended, but there is no feedback in the game to let you know if this is legitimately how the devs wanted it or if it's just a glitch in this game.

This game also has a bit of a skill tree. There are a few paths you can go down to specialize in how your build will be. The thing is, there isn't much of a "build" here. The skill trees are incredibly simplistic and you never have to think about them much outside of which tree to follow and never deviate. You also only get enough skill points for about 2 trees, so you can't really experiment too much in one run. Speaking of skill trees, halfway through the game you get a demon form. This is a form where you move very fast and can melee enemies. The thing is, this doesn't even come with a new skill tree or anything at all. It's just a one and done thing. It feels incredibly half baked and makes you wonder if the devs didn't finish this feature and they just decided to throw it in there anyways cause they didn't want to waste it. It really could have used some more expanding upon to make it more impactful or meaningful instead of something so flaccid.

I'll give the game the level design though. The areas were decently fun to explore, with a good amount of secrets. Most of my fun in my run of this game was looking for the secret areas and getting the incredibly op items the devs like to hide in these areas. On the downside, none of the areas in the game are very unique or impressive. This is a game where the aesthetic was medieval fantasy and nothing else. This didn't hold me at all and it wasn't something I hadn't seen in a million other fantasy medieval games. It's a shame since the texture work for the most part is pretty good in the game. Just sad they made such milquetoast environments.

The story for the most part was incredibly generic. Your main character is the most boring character I have ever played as in an immersive sim. There is a twist about halfway through which is kind of cool, but that's about where the interesting part of the story begins and ends. It's possibly on me for expecting something above average when I never heard anyone praise the story of this game much.

It's a little wild that this game barely has any reviews that go over the flaws of this game. I mostly had seen praise of this game online and was excited to get into it and enjoy it as much as others have seem to have. Sadly I definitely don't think this game is a classic and actually kind of regret the time I wasted getting this game to run on a modern PC.

A seriously disappointing game.

An interesting experience. This is one of the strangest indie games I have ever played.

One person made this game and I think he did a pretty good job. It's really hard to describe this game, but it is super unique. The aesthetic is beautiful and reminds me of the pipe screen saver I saw on PCs in school. The music is great too. Every single screen and area has a different theme.

For the price it's definitely worth it for a one of a kind game. If you're on the fence maybe wait for a sale and see if you like it.

A seriously strange game.
