If you like Killer is Dead or Killer 7 just try the demo. Full stop. The gameplay is more hack and slash-y against bosses like Killer is Dead or No More Heroes, but the visuals definitely capture the look of Killer 7. Its use of sheer black shadows and muted blues punctuated by flashy special boss attacks and blood works very well.

Dialogue doesn't have much going on, mostly because there isn't a lot of it. We get light worldbuilding, learn more about our character and his targets, then get to the fight. It left me wanting more, so for a demo that's all you can ask for. Also the candidness of Gilgamesh spelling out mechanics because he knows he's in a demo got a chuckle out of me.

The combat is where most of this review will get its wordcount from. I feel mixed on it: it feels very floaty and gives a bad first impression. But as I got better at fighting the 2 demo bosses I got really into it! Its hard to put into words how to make it feel "better" because by the end of the demo with both bosses defeated I felt really satisfied. The mechanics mostly have a clear use for fights and are used well. Blocking is short (its closer to parry timing than a block) but you recover quick from a successful block, fast enough to sneak a counterattack in your defense. Dodging takes a bit longer but is very safe, good for attacks that are tricky to block or if you get low on health. Also some attacks can't be blocked. Your gun is an interesting consideration for fights but I can't tell if it does enough damage to use more than a handful of times. Its more of a parry for big flashy attacks (telegraphed by your opponents eyes glowing), and being a revolver you reload one shot at a time, but it isn't clear how much of a combat option your gun is outside of parrying big attacks.

There's a few things that aren't well explained. One I'll totally admit could be me sucking, but it feels like I can do something when I die to save myself, but I never could figure out what that action is. Also attacks during boss phase transitions get me every time. Running away became my only real counter. Also long blocking is a concept that threw me off. Since blocking has a short window I didn't really understand long blocking. Its simple once you figure it out: some attacks cause a clash where you can hold your block to get through it. But my dumb ass took a lot longer to figure that out than it probably should.

The slight differences between the 2 Gilgamesh phases and Enkidu's more aggressive take on his moves was fun to learn. Learning I can temporarily knock Ishtar out of her much more dangerous second phase was VERY satisfying to learn. The bones of this game are solid, it just needs a bit more refining. Both in character feel and animation. Also I would personally really like having a few more options in fights. Your attack combo is fairly basic and your revolver feels underpowered. The latter being a real shame when you reload 1 shot at a time. Which makes sense, its a revolver. And the revolver can get big parry's off of specific big attacks. But it feels punishing to try using the revolver to sneak a hit in and it doesn't seem to do much. As for attacks you get a gap closer if you move outside the immediate vicinity of your target, but I just wish there was a little more going on in your kit. I'm not asking for full Devil May Cry, I just want a little more out of my attack moveset. The counters are well thought out and satisfying to pull off but its where most of the satisfaction of fighting comes from. Maybe extra weapons with different but also simple attacks can help? But I don't know how big this team is, and "lol just make more game" is a big ask without a team to back it up.

Overall this demo is the exact kind of demo that makes me excited when Next Fest happens. Its a rough cut gem that needs polish but I wanted more by the time I was finished. There's so much to love about this demo, from the visuals, the boss fights, Ishtar's boss theme being diegetic. I just think the fights need a little more work. Specifically how your character feels to play. And that I want more. I want to see what else is in store for this game. This demo is a highlight of this years Fest, and in a year where Parasite Mutant dropped a demo that's worth celebrating on its own. Give Beast City a shot. Learn its boss patterns and how to exploit openings and it may sink its hooks into you too.

My chat has enjoyed playing this game, as well as the goofy custom fish options built into the system. For the price it was more than worth it and made streams more fun.

Short, sweet and heartbreaking. By the end I felt a strong connection to the cast through some fantastic writing, delivery and pacing. This is also a narrative heavy game with actual game play segments, which are fun in their own right while adding additional weight and personality to the cast.
