If Cyberpunk 2077 released in 2023, it would have easily been GOTY.

Elite: Dangeous has been an experience, and although I agree that some of the criticisms put up against this game are warranted, I also feel like a great majority of players love the game and are simply not reviewing. That being said, here is my opinion on the game.

First off, let me tell you that I don't like Frontier that much. Not because they made a bad game, no. It's because I payed $60 for an unfinished (in the loosest sense of the word) game, and wasn't told up front that planetary landings was going to be a DLC. When they made the announcement that I would have to pay an additional $40ish to purchase what I thought would be free, I was more than just a little angry. Yes, they gave people who already owned the game $10 off. That didn't really help things. I would have to pay $100ish for a game that new players would only have to pay $50ish for. They got the whole game! I wasn't a kickstarter backer, but I was still an early adopter. I felt like I had been cheated.

Now Frontier has made Horizons a seperate DLC. I feel this should have been the way Horizons worked in the beginning, if you have the game already, just pay this amount. If you don't have the game, then buy the BASE game and THEN buy the DLC. It's much more fair and Frontier probably would have made the same profit as they did. But enough about Frontier's business model, and more about the game.

(Long paragraph, TL;DR: The game is confusing at first and has a steep learning curve)
The game itself is a bit disappointing at first. You start off with a sidewinder, two wimpy lasers, and an entire galaxy. The game usually starts off slowly. In fact, the game is extremely overwhelming at first. Many new players don't catch on to some of the most basic game mechanics because the most obvious first step is to do missions, and only missions. It can be daunting to find that some of the ships cost millions of credits while earning only a handfull of credits per mission. I have personally played with two of my friends, and in both cases I gave them some cargo (because transferring credits isn't possible for milking reasons) to start off in a better ship with some decent weaponry and upgrades. This helped tremendously with improving quality of gameplay. I STRONGLY reccomend watching tutorials, flying training missions, etc. The entire factions system, trading system, discovery system, upgrade mechanics, and combat mechanics are VERY complex and can be EXTREMELY confusing. I learned most of these on my own. In fact, I hadn't even learned how to upgrade my ship properly (I didn't understand the whole number/letter part codes, i.e., 2F is bigger than 1A but less powerful by a wide margin) until maybe 150 hours into the game. Same with factions.

I would say that although the game may become boring for some, to others it just keeps getting better. Having played over 200 hours myself, I still find it extremely satisfying to drift around the galaxy in my Cobra MKIII, bounty hunting and participating in community goals. The game is just as beautiful as ever, and both extremely immersive and extremely satisfying. Yes, satisfying is the word I would use. I highly reccomend a HOTAS setup (even if you have to canibalize an Extreme 3D Pro like I did) to really improve both gameplay and immersion. A joystick adds so much to the game. Flying feels more precise, and controls feel more responsive. Even navigating the menus feels much better.

The game's community, though, is the icing on the cake. There are soo many players in the game that the galaxy doesn't seem lifeless. Sure, you can play solo or private and miss out on all the fun, but just seeing other commanders in-game breathes life into the cold darkness of space. Even if they do end up being trolls sometimes who like to blow up your ship for the fun of it. Which, mind you, has only happened to me once. What I really love is that these players have broken the boundaries of the game, spreading elite into the depths of reddit, creating awesome communities like the Fuel Rats (proud member by the way). The game doesn't just stop at being a game. I've chatted late into the night with friends I've never met, watching rescue after rescue on the main Fuel Rats IRC, talking about ships and factions and experiences. That, I think, makes the game completely worth it.

PROS:
- A HUGE galaxy to explore, with countless stations, players, AI's, and things to find.
- A wide variety of unique, beautiful ships, complete with manufacturers and backstories.
- A lot of things to do. To name a few: trading, bounty hunting, mining, assasinations, piracy, slave trade, community goals, passenger tours (soon!), freelance exploration, community driven competitions, races, events, pilgrimages...
- Many, many factions to align with or fight against.
- Beautiful visuals
- Intuative and fluid interface
- Well-developed combat, risk-assesment scenarios
- Can I just get a standing ovation for the SOUND DESIGN TEAM? Sound design and music is STUNNING and immersive.
- Countless upgrades, amazing flexibility in ship customization
- Wings, to fly with your friends and TAKE OVER THE UNIVERSE (not really)

CONS:
- Not finished yet. Pretty well flushed out as it is, but needs more content
- Glitches, especially with the wings system.
- Insane complexity. Not sure if this is a pro or a con, but can be very very confusing
- No way to transfer cargo cleanly. Please give an option to dock ships together to transfer goods. Credit transfer can be too easily miked, but cargo transfer is harder to milk.
- Simply hitting a friendly ship accidentally will turn them (and possibly their entire faction) hostile. You will recieve a bounty.
- Supercruise could be better. Arrival at stations, planets, signals, etc. is still tedious. Blue zone works as it should, but is still slower than painstakingly throttling up and down to stay at that 6-second mark.

There are many more pros and cons, but overall I would recommend this game. Heck, I have already recommended this game to two of my friends. They both enjoyed it, and one of them still plays. If you ever find CMDR Spicy Rick in-game, tell him CMDR LightningRacer says hi.

--OLD REVIEW--

Good gameplay, horrible menu. I understand the game came out yesterday, and that it is still in early access, but the menu is COMPLETELY unusable for someone attempting to play this game with a simple keyboard/mouse like me. The controls simply don't work. I can't go back, I can't get to the research part of the menu under loadout... Not to mention that the Aerolab in the campain menu doesn't work at all (It's all glitched out). One time when I started the game the letters were just a bunch of mutilated pixels. Another time I couldn't even start. I realize I haven't played this game long, but that's simply because the menus are unusable.

Now actual gameplay? That's a different story. I absolutely LOVE it. The style, the sounds, and yes, even the anoying cheezy music. It's very well-made. I have a great time when I'm in the game, but in-between levels I have to fight with the menu so much that it drains the energy right out of the gameplay. I'm sorry, but I can't honestly give this game a thumbs-up with the horrid menu.

Fix the menu controls, and this game could very well be legendary material!

[EDIT] I played this game again and looked up the menu controls. They still glitch pretty bad, but I understand the menu a little better. I think I was a little too harsh with my review. Thumbs up. Still, the implementation of mouse controls or at least fixing the keyboard ones would be a HUGE improvement. This game is incredibly addicting.

[EDIT #2] It's fixed. Completely fixed. I love this game to bits now that everything works well. Believe the reviews that say the game is better with a joystick, because now that the rebinding of controls works perfectly a simple joystick makes the game 2000% more fun to play. I HIGHLY recommend.

I played this game during the free week. Potential? YES! This game has MASSIVE potential.

Is it here yet? Well... no. Hardly any of it is here.

I'm going to start off by saying that I understand why people are upset. There are only two weapons, the AI is horrible, and the story is barely even existent. The game at this point doesn't really know where it's going.

I have faith, though. I believe that this game will find a direction. Let's see... the maps are OUTSTANDING as it is. The AR is good, the SMG is also good. The graphics are REALLY GOOD. Seriously, that lighting though.

Multiplayer gameplay is great, but I wish each match was a bit longer, and I very much hope that there will be some automatic team ballancing and automated AFK kicking implemented soon. As for the two-minute respawn time and the three shot kills, I actually enjoy it. In real life, you can get hit with one bullet and die, or you can get hit with thirty bullets and be fine afterwards. There could be some of that mechanic, although for now, three shot kills are adequate. It's less about killing and more about living.

Oh, and the ability to flip up your helmet adds SO MUCH TO THE GAME. I'm not joking. Just the reality of knowing that you have control over your own suit helps the immersion immensly. Also when you get shot the first time your suit goes offline so that's cool too.

Potential is great here. You've already got the immersion and the gameplay, just add storyline and content! The devs just need to pick a finite direction and chase it.

Good luck! I will be purchasing the Early Access soon just to support you guys on your journey!
