Took a while to get used to as this is my first Monster Hunter game. Combat feels fine, though I'm no expert on the subject of this type of game. There are points where I feel it could be improved (IE the fact that a 'leap of faith' skill exists when it should simply exist as a base mechanic is just stupid), but overall I'd rate the gameplay at a solid 8.5/10.

I got this game to play with my friends. Now I'm not sure if any of my friends can keep up as they burnt out whereas I will play a game for months at a time before I get tired of it....

Last note, I didn't get this game for the story... God did I not get this game for it's story. If only we could choose our Handler as well as our character.

TL;DR: The game is easily worth ten bucks. The people ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about price versus playtime are spoiled rotten by steam sales IMHO. The game puts out quite a bit for a $10 USD pricetag. Other countries I cannot speak for. Good puzzles, fun with a good friend, I will be upgrading my edition because I want a continuation to this series.

All I see is the hate for how short this game is... It's $10 USD? Have we really been so spoiled by Sales that $10 for a couple of hours of enjoyment with a friend isn't worth it? I managed to talk to somebody who went to the same University as the team that made the original 'We Were Here' as their graduation project. Gleaned some interesting insights at the time which got me curious enough to try the original. I was in luck as one of my friends had already gotten me to download the game before I started poking around about it.

Needless to say, We Were Here left me with some pretty good impressions after we had played through it both ways. Sure, it was short, but it was free. Considering that I'm fond of the saying 'you get what you paid for', I was actually rather impressed with the game. It wasn't too difficult, and it set up the premise for this game which definitely did a good job of scaling up the challenge factor.

Anyways, since the average reader has the attention span of a moth at a fireworks display (Thank you for that line, Yahtzee!), I'll list off the pros and cons...

Pros:
-Immersive
-Fun
-Underlying story
-Challenging (At least somewhat, since there will always be those individuals who try to laud their intellect)
-10$ is pretty cheap

Cons:
-Short (Although one can argue brevity is a good thing)
-Microphones are NECESSARY

Summary: Honestly it's a great game. If you've got a friend and you both enjoy puzzles and can bear eachother's company, snag this game and have at it. And don't cheat by looking up let's plays or anything. This game is only ever enjoyed if you can go end with as little information as possible.

Review as of 11/2019

The game's still 'good' content wise. Just don't expect anything aside from dissappointment from the official servers and the teams that maintain them.

I won't bother with the anectdotes.

If you want to play ark and enjoy it, play unofficial servers run by people you trust. The official network is garbage, crossarks are a pointless endeavor because of the map balancing, and the toxic garbage that plays this game gets away with BS that would probably get you instantly banned because of issues such as pocket-devs.

Post Scriptum: This holds up for 2024, same advice except from what I can tell there are no more official servers? Probably for the better if it's true. Find a privately hosted server cluster and play there, far better that way.

I am a simple man; I see "Helios Dreadnaught" and I click the buy button.

The Legacy Premonition is also F'n HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE.

As of this update I can't fully review the ships, but dear god the Bounty targets definitely provide a challenge. I'll honestly say that the ships are what makes this DLC worth it. Can't wait for LGM to release bigger DLC's for this game.

UPDATED REVIEW (5/4/2020) TL;DR at the bottom.

Just a quick bit of myself: Outside of this, I will probably be nobody important to you reading this. I'm not here to self aggrandize, just to try and give some context. I love Half Life. I watched my uncle play it when I was a toddler, watched my father play Half Life 2 when I was roughly ten years old, and finally rediscovered the game that captured my attention when I was able to game on my own PC and with my own steam account. I've played other games of other genres (Other favorites including Homeworld, Bioshock, Borderlands, Path of Exile, Warframe, New Vegas, and more), but Half Life as a series holds a special place among them. So there is obviously some bias, but I will try to apply an objective lens to at least *part* of this review.

Black Mesa, prior to releasing on steam, was an objectively fantastic remaster of the first three quarters of Half Life. They successfully updated the visuals, sound, and gameplay and brought Half life as it was in 1999 into a proper modern remaster. Then, in 2020, Crowbar Collective delivered the final piece in the Xen update. This has all been sixteen years in the making... And I can't find myself saying that any of it has gone to waste.

I am normally a wordy person, but I will try to keep this concise. First, I want to point out that I am going to be literal in the use of 'objectively'. There is a set of criteria that I personally think any game under the genre of "Remaster" should fulfill in order to be an objective 10/10 game.

Let's start:
1: Does it resemble the original game mechanics, story, and theme, to a fault?
2: Does it improve the appearance or overall gameplay experience, and ideally bring it to an up to date standard?
3: Does it fulfill the previous categories without making any sacrifices or reductions to the original product that aren't absolutely necessary, or didn't directly benefit the project?

I'm not some qualified blue-checkmarked celebrity, I'm just some guy with a set of standards. So I'll give my answer to those three questions as of reaching the Gonarch's Lair chapter of the Xen portion.

1: 100% yes. If I had been living under a rock ever since I played Half Life 1, and you found me and showed me still images of Black Mesa during any point of the game, I'd immediately recognize it. CBC really did a fantastic job in recreating the look *and* Feel of the original Half Life.

2: It's not Crysis 3 levels of graphics, but I can comfortably say that Black Mesa successfully achieved a modern standard. The part that impresses me the most is that they managed this on the Source engine.

3: This one is a bit tricky to answer, as I am trying to be objective in answering these. If there are any sacrifices made to the completion of Black Mesa 1.0, it's the amount of time it took, but seeing as where it was spent? I would be a hypocrite to complain, especially as I'm still patiently awaiting Half life 3. Some cuts to the overall game were made but were in turn replaced with content that is equally worthy if not better.

All in all, I don't think I can ever fully appreciate the amount of time, hard work, and love that went into this absolutely wonderful and faithful recreation of Half Life. I read the reviews posted by XYZ review sites and found myself almost angry at them... So I wanted to make my own, if only with the hope that the fine staff from the Crowbar Collective might read it if nobody else, so I can say with the upmost sincerity: Thank you.

Thank you for having this dream, for working towards it, and then sharing it; thank you from the bottom of my heart as a child of the gaming age. I have followed this project ever since its announcement when I was still in Jr High 13 years ago with an eager glow in my eyes, re-watched the first trailer until every sound and sight was permanently engraved into my memory, sat with anticipation as the hours counted down to the first public release, and all the way to here and now. Thank you.

TL;DR : Black Mesa is Amazing for what it set out to be. Some people might find themselves wanting, but I think everyone should at least give this fresh take on history a try.

I'll make my review brief, but start with a short anectdote to address the common resentment towards Dead Money.

Dead Money is vastly underappreciated by the general gaming community for a few reasons, none of which is universal. This DLC took a different stance on Fallout's storytelling as it was in Fo3 and New Vegas Vanilla. It's been made much more difficult, given a rough and bitter taste, and taken on a much more grim outlook than displayed in Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, or even the Lonesome Road.

ACTUAL REVIEW:

Each of the DLC's had a motif about them; with Honest Hearts it was the choices of Vengeance and Mercy, in Old World Blues it was Nostalgia, and Lonesome Road was the Cycle of History. With Dead Money it's 'Letting Go' as the voice of Vera Key's over the radio said. I won't get into the story itself, but I will put it into a quick list of merits and faults:

+The Story is AMAZING. It cuts deep, and leaves the avid listener awestruck, and as always in fallout it's rewarding to those that dig deeper.
+The Gameplay is UNIQUE for a Fallout expansion, it pulls in more puzzle solving and Stealth aspects that support a character with some balance to their skillset.
+The Characters have some serious DEPTH. I can't say much more without spoiling it.
+You as the player will be CHALLENGED. The difficulty is much less forgiving than any of the other DLCs, and those less so than the base game.

-The Atmosphere can be absolutely DEPRESSING. I'd almost consider this a point in their favor, as it's all probably the intended effect they were hoping for.
-The Enemies are RELENTLESS. I don't complain about difficulty, but some people may find that having to literally destroy every bit of the most common enemy to be Tedious.
-The Reward is somewhat UNSATISFYING. There's some perks to completing this DLC, but all in all the material rewards aren't too great. I appreciate that the story is a huge reward on its own, to me at least, but I'd like a little more to show for my time in the Sierra Madre than a makeshift spear and a Revolver chambered in .357.

My personal review of this DLC in scoring? I'd give it a solid 8.5/10. But I'm one of fickle taste.

Nonetheless, I recommend it, and since it comes with Ultimate you may as well give it a try if you do own it.

The game itself is great. The mods that are out there? Insane. If you're a diehard starwars fan (And I mean this stuff gets into the Extended universe) then go get the Thrawn's Revenge mod, or the Legacy Era mod, or Rise of the Mandalorians. This game is the last breath of Classic Starwars in todays RTS genre, and the mods make it worth taking.

I'm more addicted to this game than Minecraft lately. When my friends are off doing their thing in games I don't have, I'm usually in this. I'm only just scratching the surface of potential, too. Creative if insanely fun, and Survival is harshly challenging. If you want more challenge in either mode, the recent addition of Meteor storms has seriously kicked things up a notch. If you feel the need you can change your world settings from Survival to Creative, you can change the frequency of Meteor showers, and adjust the realism of Survival if you're having a hard time with the masochistic default survival settings.

Not a true Sandbox game yet, but I imagine that is a possibility in the future. The plyable objects and terrain is also fun, you can drill into things, blow it apart with rockets, or stockpile warheads and set it all on fire!

I left out that I found the Music rather fitting and epic, but to summarize the rest: Buy this game if you like building things and space ships. It's still in-dev so there's definitely more to come!

-Addendum 10/10/2014 GET THIS WHILE IT'S ON SALE! This game is PERFECT for the creative minds out there and the people who enjoy space sandboxes. It has it's limits still for me, but once I get a new computer I intend on writing a completely new review. Play it while you can and try and get it while it's on sale!
