With no spoilers, my review of Space Marine 2's story is summed up as thus:

The perfect sequel to the first game.


It has some flaws currently, but all of these are outweighed by the gameplay and story.

Chief among them SO FAR:

-Co Op does not support private lobbies YET
-Co Op is limited to 3 players (If they double it or at least don't intervene in modding then this will make the game even more popular)
-Assorted nitpicks about particular weapons (IE certain heavy attacks not staggering enemies out of unblockable attacks is infuriating in some cases)
-Certain difficulty scaling elements feel excessive or fall more into the Frustrating camp than challenging camp
-Coop squads can only have one of any class, which while i understand is going to make more people unhappy than happy
- THAT MASSIVE TEASE in the main that left me with the most blue of ultra smurf balls!

But like I said, those are all nitpicks. Overall I give this game a 9/10 with a 10/10 for the story.


I was also EXTREMELY happy to see that GW's recent infestation by slaaneshi cultists has had effectively 0 impact on the game's story.

I paid way too much for this game.

We were told early on that BBI would have total creative control, but that was clearly a lie as GB's grubby trash tier-writing is all over this.

If it was a matter of the gameplay being a let down versus previous installments, It could be technically fixed with updates and expansions, but this is not the case.

People need to learn from some seismic words from one of the legends of gaming:

"Late is once, suck is forever."

Unfortunately, Homeworld 3 was both.

A must play if you've already played through Half Life 2, Eps 1 and 2, as well as Portal...

There's a lot to this that makes me wonder if any of these events will be considered Canon moving forward...

Get the YAML and the other Equipment, weapon, and mech affiliated mods and you've got a good 60-70 hours of gameplay if you enjoy collecting and upgrading gear with friends.

Not a game for everyone, can get repetitive, but it's pretty well polished for what it is.

[NOTE: I received this game as a gift intiialy, but since then I've turned around and bought a copy for another friend and will likely do so again]

Time spent at time of review: 60 Hours and counting

The Negative reviews lack a lot of perspective and broad context (And no, not just "Fact Check: Missing Context")

"This is third iteration in '-tide' games from Fatshark, where x, y, or z?"

Somewhat valid Criticism, but there's some issues with comparing Darktide to VT2. Vermintide set up a good system to build Vermintide 2 off of, but Darktide is an entirely different universe and to just try and copy/paste the whole of the Vermintide 2 system into Warhammer 40k, which sounds remarkably easy, isn't quite that simple.

1: Vermintide 2 has a much heavier focus on Melee, Darktide keeps a lot of the melee focus because Warhammer isn't just a suggestion, it's the name of the Universe(s). There's just a lot more readily available ranged play here because of the nature of the grim darkness of the 41st millennium.

2: Fatshark wanted to try and put a new spin on the loot and crafting system- it's all still mostly RNG, but you don't have to bust your rear to try and get better weapons, you just have to get the money to purchase them, shifting the grind from an RNG grind to a bit of a resource grind with some RNG on the side (Every week, you get up to 10 drops at the end of completed missions per character that tend to have a higher rarity).

3: The Crafting System itself is in fact not currently complete. As of this review, you can only 'Consecrate' items which adds a minor or a major attribute (At maximum upgrade you are guaranteed 2 minor and 2 major attributes). This is a valid point to hold against Fatshark, but I understand that they want to make sure they get it right because the last thing they want to do is nerf crafting in any way for all of the issues THAT can lead to. Is it kinda bad of them to not have it ready yet? Sure. Is it the worst way to handle it? Far from it, and I understand why it's that way. Wether this is a dealbreaker for you as a consumer is entirely up to you, I just disagree with the more egregious assumptions that others have made on the matter.

4: The core gameplay loop is more or less complete, with expansion of said gameplay loop moving forward basically a guarantee. Calling the game 'unfinished' isn't as accurate as to say it lacks polish in some areas, as many games tend to these days. No, I don't like that this is the state of the industry, but there's little that I can do about it as an individual. Overall, since I've been playing, the number of gamebreaking bugs I've experienced is 0, the number of game impacting bugs I've experienced (At least, that I can confidently point out) is 1 bug that happens every now and again with Scriptures getting stuck in boxes because their model gets put under the world when exchanged with a medipack or ammo crate. All in all? For a game that I was highly skeptical of at first, Darktide surprised me.

5: Psyker got overnerfed during the Beta. Please, please help out the psyker players by giving them back SOMETHING.

All of these things in mind? I can give a short and sweet review on the game:

I have many issues with Games Workshop. This game is NOT one of them, and is honestly something that gives me hope for the future of the franchise in video games. Several of my friends all broke their boycott because of how good Darktide is and how much fun we have. The Gunplay is crisp, the weapon variety is currently narrow but updates will be expanding upon them, the classes are in fact memorable and the voice acting gives me way too many laughs.

TL;DR Pros outweigh the cons, the game is good and updates aim to improve it further.

Let me start by saying that Outer Worlds is by no means a bad game. It is well polished, has a story that asks the moral questions that evokes the Gamer-Politics paradox (The paradox being that Gamers LOVE politics, just not real world politics). It also features a host of characters with their own stories and various avenues for you to interact with them, with the deepest points featured in the companion side quests. The gunplay is on the better end, although the variety is a bit limited, and the overall experience was rather smooth for me.

I have some choice criticisms, and I'll start with the most shallow:

I hate the art style, especially that used for weapon design. I didn't much like it in Bioshock, and I don't really enjoy it here. Does it make the game play worse? Not at all, I just dislike it enough to voice my opinion on it.

Secondly, I am tired of the "Corporate run dystopian future" setting. I was able to tolerate it in Fallout because the problems of corporations were in the past and the player is just having to deal with the literal and metaphorical fallout of said issues with a story that focused more on individuals and groups as they adapted to the post apocalypse. In Outerworlds, the "megacorp bad" idea is on full blast, constantly, all the time. Obsidian gets some credit for doing a good job of showing more than telling, but not enough that I can discount it entirely.

Lastly, Depth. I am very aware that I am not the only person who saw an RPG from Obsidian that had obvious inspiration taken from the Fallout franchise and was instantly excited. Much like many of my peers in this matter, I am also (at least now) very aware of just how high of a bar that set, and find Outerworlds lacking. If any of the developers from this project are reading this: You made a fine and well polished product with Outerworlds, do not let my being hit by the Hype-train shake any certainty of that. I came into this expecting crush-depth levels of a world much like was found in Fallout New Vegas, but I hadn't even considered how unfair that expectation was until after the fact. FNV had plenty of established lore and events to build off of on top of the Dev team at the time having most of the game-play related work done for them, meaning they could focus solely on world and story elements. The Outerworlds, by comparison, has no such luxury. So, I'll wrap up this bit of criticism by saying: I enjoyed Outerworlds, but unfortunately I kept finding myself saying "I'd much rather play New Vegas".


In conclusion...

Outerworlds is a solid game with a mild story that has the unfortunate luck to be stuck in the shadow of Fallout New Vegas, but has set the stage for potential successor titles to build off of, but others might not have that issue.

The fact that Bethesda's 'Fallout 1st' Malarkey subscription service is trying to sell itself partly on the Ranger Veteran armor from THIS game kinda says something. New Vegas is the last great fallout game that we'll probably ever see.
