Saints Row 2 is an unrepeatable masterpiece. Undoubtedly the best game in the entire Saints Row franchise.
Does it look good? Naw...
Does it run well? Also no.
But my God, is it the most fun I've had in an open world in ages.

This game achieves the perfect balance between wacky blow-♥♥♥♥-up-while-dressed-as-a-hot-dog type shenanigans that later entries leaned so heavily into, and a somewhat more serious, at times tear-jerking story. This is the last time the Saints were portrayed as actual ruthless gangsters, rather than TV celebrities, the President and their crew, or your local Starbucks dwellers.

The city of Stillwater albeit quite small, feels huge and lively thanks to each district having its own distinct visual style. NPCs interact with the world and each other in a believable way, random events happen around every corner and of course there's myriads of destructible props & physics objects littered around town, most of which you can pick up and throw at unsuspecting bystanders. It's by no means impressive by today's standards, but still holds up fairly well after all these years.

Surprisingly enough keyboard & mouse controls are very much viable, despite the game being firmly rooted in the Xbox 360 controller paradigm. There are a few strange keybinds by default, such as CTRL to grab an NPC as a human shield or up arrow to recruit gang members, however any and all bindings can be changed in the options menu. Speaking of, there's absolutely no mouse control in any of the menus, and as far as I'm aware there's no mods to implement it, so get used to hammering them arrow keys anytime you're customising your vehicles or character, buying clothes & food, mucking about with the settings (which, trust me, you'll do a lot) or using your in-game phone. That said, you *can* use a mouse pointer on the map screen, which is kind of unexpected but also very welcome. Still, an Xbox controller is recommended, although not necessary.

The overall gameplay experience is absolutely impeccable. You're never really funnelled into completing specific tasks in a specific order, you're basically free to tackle the whole game as you see fit. The only limitation is the respect bar - you need to have a certain amount of respect in order to start story missions. This forces you to engage in side missions, activities and diversions, which are arguably the most fun part of the whole game. However, you're never forced into completing any one specific side mission or activity in order to progress, and there's so many different ways to earn respect I can't even keep count of them, so this should not be an issue for anyone but the busiest of gamers looking to mainline the story, who can't even afford to spend 5 minutes spraying poo at NPCs out of a septic tank before seeing the next story beat.

With all that said, it's time for the technical bits. This is notoriously the worst PC port of 2009, so for those of you who don't own an Xbox 360 and are looking to buy this game in the Year of Our Lord 2022, here's some tips & tricks for getting the best out of the PC version:

1.) Gentlemen of the Row is a must. If it's your first playthrough, compile the patch without any additional mods. It will make the game a bit more stable and smooth without changing anything about the developers' original vision.
2.) Turn off HDR and anti-aliasing - leaving both on can and will cut your framerate in half, even on modern systems.
3.) Play in windowed mode. This mitigates a lot of the random crashes for some reason.
4.) Limit your framerate to 60 using your graphics card driver's control panel. This will mitigate crashing during mission end screens. The game originally shipped with a 30FPS cap on PC, which has since been removed, but it seems high framerates still cause stability issues especially when finishing a mission.
5.) Lock your CPU clocks at 3.2GHz and set the affinity to 6 threads if your hardware allows for it - the game expects this configuration as the Xbox 360's CPU was also clocked at this speed and had 6 threads, nevermind the architectural differences between x86 and PowerPC.

I wouldn't usually condone piracy, but this absolute gem of a game is no longer available to buy anywhere, and considering how dirty Rockstar have done the community with their DMCA abuse, various legal threats and the state of the "Definitive Edition" remasters (which are also not on Steam, btw...), I'd absolutely encourage anyone and everyone to pirate a copy of the original Vice City, complete with its original roster of licensed music and racism.

Wish I could give this a rating between good and bad... it's an excellent game, still every bit as fun as it was over a decade ago, but it's also riddled with bugs and technical issues that could potentially be game-breaking or a complete turn-off for some. In my case, specifically, the game freezes up for a good 20-30 seconds every minute, whether I'm in-game or in the menus, and towards the end of the first mission the helicopter you have to kill would get stuck off-screen, leaving the very first mission uncompletable (<- is this even a word?). Unless I run Steam in Offline mode, that is, which seems to get rid of all freezing, stuttering and performance issues. Of course having to play in offline mode means co-op is not available, which leaves me locked out of some achievements, as well as a heap of fun, and Steam will not log my playtime correctly.
With all this in mind, there's a lot more issues that aren't strictly speaking game-breaking. Audio is very inconsistent - sounds abruptly cut off, conversations play on top of each other, the radio tends to break if you switch channels during a news cast, vehicle sounds play incorrectly (eg.: car sounds like it's at top speed even after coming to a complete halt) or just don't play at all, the in-game radio sounds like it has a weird flanger / rotary effect applied to it, a lot of environmental noises sound incredibly compressed and volumes seem to be all over the place. As far as I can remember, the original release did not have these issues. I can't help but wonder whether the existence of the remaster has something to do with all these regressions.

But hey, there's a native Linux port, too! Too bad it doesn't work at all. As in, it crashes before getting to the main menu. The way it gets there is also quite strange, as the intro movies only play if I move the mouse. Letting go of the mouse "pauses" the intro video, and doing anything other than moving the mouse (ie clicking or pressing any key on the keyboard) causes a crash to desktop. Proton is also a no-go - it won't get past the "Select DirectX version" screen. Something to do with DRM, afaik. If you're a penguin enthusiast, you may want to turn towards the GOG version, which does actually run fine under Proton and even good old Wine.

If I had to judge this game solely on the out-of-the-box experience on Steam on both Windows and Linux, I'd give it a hard thumbs-down. However, considering this is the third copy of Saints Row: The Third I own (and it also cost me £3), I'm obligated to give it a good rating and hope that whoever sees this will opt to pick up the GOG version instead, as this one seems to have gone sour over the years.

Great game, but...
... if you're planning to play on Linux, don't bother. It's a terrible port.

In my case, I can't even get to the menus. The game flashes a corrupted window, then dies, sometimes taking ksmserver down with itself.
Scouring the logs, I found it complains about my graphics card (AMD HD7770) not being supported, despite both the Store page and the system requirements sheet released by the devs clearly stating that it is. Furthermore, it doesn't seem to know what to do with my Realtek on-board sound chip, whether PulseAudio is installed or not. After attempting to initialise the audio, the game crashes with a segmentation fault.

At first I thought this could be attributed to the fact I'm running Arch and/or this particular setup, so I tried to install the game on a different machine, sporting a 3rd generation i5 and an nvidia 610, running a fresh, untampered install of Kubuntu 17.10. Results were largely the same - although I did get to see a flash of the menu screen, it crashed immediately as I tried to move the mouse. 3 out of 5 times, it took the entire KDE desktop with it once again.

Being the tinkerer I am, I tried every fix/workaround I found online, ranging from running '-safemode', through modifying environment variables, all the way to compiling the latest development version of Mesa, just to get to at least see some semblance of in-game graphics. But alas!, nothing helped.

So far, the only way I could actually run the game was by chucking another hard drive into my preexisting machine and installing Windows 7. Needless to say, though, setting up another operating system - especially the one that made me board the Linux train back in the day - for just one, singular game is not worth the hassle for me.

I ended up requesting a refund after ~10 hours of tinkering and 20 minutes of actual gameplay.
