How to get involved in the gaming industry, (in the developent and creative process of making a game)
Hey GLaDOS,

I'm not directly involved with the creative process of game design, but I do work in the industry so I'll try my best to answer your question.

A lot of the "game design" aspect of video games revolves around creative ideas. It's all about being able to sit down and map out strategies, and a workflow for the rest of your team. If you're able to create a sensible work flow, and have intuitive ideas, you can create an awesome concept for a game.

Another large part of game design is the willingness to create, conceptualize, and restart. The reason I say this is because a LARGE part of the "game design" title is being able to bring something to a certain point, and making sure your team agrees upon it. If they don't, you'll have to go all the way back to the drawing board and make changes. You also have to factor in balancing your game so that the player doesn't run through everything.

Remember - as a game designer, you are literally creating the EXPERIENCE that the player goes through, you want it to be memorable and something they won't forget. You can never assume a player understand anything, and you want the game to convey a compelling story that will be drilled into the players head. You want your player to feel like they are actually doing something in the game, and that they aren't just another one in a million crack shots.

As for "getting into the industry" - I'd suggest you conceptualize a few things first, create some documentation. Use word, do some minor sketches of what things would look like, you don't have to be an artist, just something that says, "If player 1 goes here, this will happen, hence creating a sense of X resource being important". All of these pitches, ideas, whatever - right them down. If you have an idea when you go to bed, keep a notepad on your night stand so you can write things down.

Good luck!

Place for a graphic designer in the industry?
Hey Voodoo,

I'm a graphic designer myself. Since I'm in the industry, I'll tell you a little bit about my struggles, and how I managed to get where I am now.

Everything started for me with 2D pixel art, in GIMP. After awhile, being paid to do 2D pixel art animations when I was 13 years old. (Which at the time, I thought was awesome.) I made sprite sheets and imported them to animation shop to create cool effects for an RP community I was apart of.

Through that experience, I was able to discover that there was more to Photoshop than just pixel art, you could do so much with the program. I began working on Web design aesthetics and simple forum designs for vBulletin and Invision Power Boards. From there, I built a portfolio of UI/UX design through freelancing for communities.

This is where the game industry comes in - UI/UX is our home, and our nature. If you can create an eye-pleasing product that can direct a user down the yellow brick road, all while maintaining good nature, you'll have a job in the industry. Focus on creating menus, UI/HUDs, whatever. I like to play a game called Planetside 2 by SOE - I redesigned the entire map HUD or the game to be more intuitive and give more information, I posted it on Reddit and got some awesome feedback, a few months later I saw a great representation of my work in the actual game. That is when I realized that I could branch out and do UI/UX design full time - and now I work as a UI designer at an indie studio being paid to do what I love.
