MMORPG gaming ideas
Hi my names Conor. I live in Peterborough Ontario and I'm kind of in between figuring out what i want to do with my life. Right now im goingto be going to college for International Trade but honestly it isnt what I'm interested in. By heart I am a writer and a designer with a very interesting and sometimes borderline sociopathic way of twisting fear into reality.
I have come up with a couple ideas (and I'm sure theyr'll be more) for some interesting horror style video games that I think could really take off. Two promising ones are a single player horror with an omnicient antagonist that toys with the mind of a writer (similar in ways to Alan Wake but also going to be very different and interesting, and also more scary instead of suspenseful). The other game I'm working on right now in the pre-production brainstorm phase right now is an MMORPG with a twist there I gaurentee when brought to full production, will leave the rediculously bland and stale "go kill some goblins for me please" atmosphere of World of Warcraft back in the 80's where it belongs.
The reason of course that I am contacting you over at Steam is that I beleive I am meant to work in the world of the ever-expanding gaming industry, I beleive horror films are (becoming) much a thing of the past and I beleive that if I do end up being able to get a few of my titles into the hands of the gaming community, I'd like them to be playing them on steam.
The devoloping company that intruiges me the most is hands down Ubisoft, due to their stellar graphics and intruiging gameplay in The Division (looks awsome).
Anyways, basicly what I'm asking for is some information on how to get into the gaming industry as a writer and game developer.
VERY eager to hear back from you, future game designer,
Conor.

Hi, Conor. Very soon, we're going to launch the full version of the Valve Pipeline, which will contain various videos that can help you with getting into the gaming industry. The videos that might interest you the most will be the ones that are interviews with current game developers, in which they will describe how they got into the industry.

Thanks for your interest, and stay tuned! For now, you should go to http://pipeline.valvesoftware.com and subscribe to the newsletter under "When will this information be released?" so that we can contact you as soon as the full site launches.

The MMORPG genre is a *very* unstable genre to work on, but I recommend you to read some documents about game design, there are excelent ones spreaded through the internet, the MIT makes most of it's courses available online, if you really have interest you should read them

like Sam Za Nemesis the MMORPG genre really is unstable, take a look at Defiance. Promising and cool looking but then Trion fired a chunk of its staff and quality keeps getting worse. World of Warcraft use to be a big deal but now its dwindled down to a little spec with the modern military shooters seem to be roaming around filling up all the media. Personally i enjoy RTS and Battlefield *battlefield yes modern military shooter but team play and graphics aren't bad in my opinion*

World of Warcraft is precisely the market I intend to steal ;) I beleive ultra-realism is what the video game market is calling for now and I intend to produce a unique virtual controller system that will write games like Warcraft, Call of Duty and Fear into the history books where they now belong. The only thing I'm worried about is my game becoming too big of a part of people's lives. That's why I'm going to do everything I can to design the in-game features in such a way that it actually positively benefits people's lives.
