Here is a very useful video for 3ds Max users and hard surface modelling in general.

Also I would highly recommend following Millenias Shotgun Tutorial series. It's super useful.

What about Silo? That one seems pretty neat and cheap.

If you like Silo, use it, but there seem to be better program such as Maya, 3DS max, Modo or Blender(which is free). I never tried Zbrush or 3D coat so I can't say anything about them.
