Steam Game Festival (Feb 2021) - Demo Reviews
Just compiling the stuff I wrote in my GA descriptions :)

1. Godlike Burger
I love time management games - been playing them since I was young - and this really puts a more gory twist to the typical gameplay formula that I know and love. In this game, you run a shabby burger joint for aliens and the way you get your patties is by killing your customers... preferably the ones who has already paid you for their order and gave you a tip for a job well-done! You can even turn parts of your kills into "sauces" too. Of course, you can't go on a murdering spree... that'll just get the cops on your tail; you need to be more subtle about it... only killing customers when they are isolated and alone. There are (supposedly) multiple worlds you can expand your burger business to, each of them with different alien species to cater to... some of which can be very hard to kill.

The game is already pretty perfect as it is. It just needs to fix some minor issues like long-pressing the F key doesn't always work as expected, and to add more content in between the current two worlds, one of which is easy enough for a beginner level, but the other is too difficult to be the second world, especially since you can't just rack up a ton of upgrades playing just the easy world in a limited demo.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiR50xCywug

2. Potion Craft
A pretty incredible game I'd say - I love how challenging the potion discovery map can be to navigate and how you need to grind and mix a variety of herbs just so you can discover a new potion and/or get the highest grade potion. The interesting dialogues you get from your customers, especially the vendors help to give your AI customers some personality too. However, I'm not much of a fan of its very restrictive recipe book though. Each upgrade only gives you 2 more slots and the game has so many potion recipes to discover, with each potion offering up to 3 grades of quality (I think the total is 5, but the best I did is 3 and I think it isn't possible atm to get a 5th-grade potion), and many more different ways you can arrive to the same potion.

Gameplay video:
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVkSIf5oJTs
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXe-nb6e8TI (figured out, with some help :), how to mix multi-effect potions)

3. Timberborn
Man, the dry season here is BRUTAL! To put it simply though, Timberborn is a fairly chill beaver-themed city-builder, except... again... the dry seasons, so there aren't any hostile creatures to slay or enemies. So far, the game has a pretty robust resource system in place, a nice handful of buildings, 3 beaver races (though, you can only try the first one in the demo), and 2 different maps. Players can already have a lot of fun trying different strategies to really expand their beaver colony. There's a map editor planned, and hopefully, the created maps can be shared among the community just so players can try their hand playing other people's maps and the game can have a bit more longevity. Would be nice if I can prioritize certain buildings and/or their construction though.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFpVdWKpz8Q
(Had to restart my first run; in my second, I made it through the dry season but didn't manage to re-accumulate my stash of water supply fast enough to quench the thirst of my beavers)

4. Roguebook
If you love card-based roguelikes, you'll definitely enjoy playing this one! In this game, you use limited number of brushes and inks (looted from fights) to dispel the fog of war and reveal nearby grids. Sometimes, you may even find free coins, battles, free reveals, and other interesting structures. Deckbuilding is a major part of game naturally, but I like that the decks you build doesn't swell to the point of being unmanageable although you technically can't "delete" any cards from your deck. Cards can be augmented with some powerful gems in the game and your heroes (you seem to be able to recruit one more per run) can equip some powerful relics too. After every run, there's a traits tree that you can invest whatever scrolls you've collected to further improve your odds in the next run.

As much as I've enjoyed my second run though, there seems to be some balancing issues still - for example, the boss I encountered in my first run keeps stacking Power which bolstered its attacks to insane numbers. The devs should definitely add a time limit to the Power boost or at least reduce the health (to maybe 12 or 15) of the boost-providing spawns so it's easier to take care of them in a single turn. Personally, I also think that the second tier of traits upgrade has a ridiculous cost (10 scrolls when you can earn maybe 3 scrolls per Chapter per run). It'll be quite the grind and I don't think it's going to be the fun sort.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-KfZRQEeH0

5. Dorfromantik
This game reminded me of another relaxing city-builder that I've played before (not Townscaper but it's close enough I guess >.<)... the name slipped my mind right now but I'll get it back, eventually :P... and it's incredibly fun! I love the strategy required in the game if you aim to score high and complete as many "quests" (speech bubbles) as you can. Beautiful graphics and great and simple controls too. The perfect wind-down game!

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwpQT-A7UBw

6. Tinytopia
This is one unique casual city-builder. It combines the relaxing merge-and-match mechanics with the strategic stacking to allow you to "discover" new building types. The game also has a helpful blueprint where you can find out more about the "building progression" you can do with the buildings you've uncovered... or you can simply click on the building to see how you can further expand on it and get the next tier. The challenge levels are pretty interesting as well and has absolutely nothing to do with city-building - it's more of a stacking puzzle as in can you reach this height without having your stacked buildings collapse like wobbly Jenga. Not for hardcore city-builders, but if you're looking for a relaxing and somewhat mindless game where you can design and build a variety of little cities in different scenarios, then Tinytopia is perfect for you!

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QfSblmPiB0

7. Cursed Treasure 2 Ultimate Edition - Tower Defense
I've actually bought the base game on Fanatical but I haven't played it yet :P Thought I should still give this a shot since I love TDs.

Update: Absolutely love the challenging night mode here, and unlike most TDs that offer some form of a barracks where you can attempt to halt the progress of the creeps with troops of your own, this game doesn't provide that. To put it simply, it's not too different from your typical TD game but it's different enough to perk up my interest just because I'm always on the lookout for TDs with different concepts and not just Kingdom Rush clones :P

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUJzMwNk93E

8. Tree of Life: Oddria!
Supposed to be an MMO but the demo lets you play in single-player mode. Huge map to explore; combat is more active than just hacking and slashing while standing still; extensive crafting tree to unlock; and hidden stashes to find. Lots of issues still though - like the fact that there are too many zombies spawned at night and that they can glitch-walk through the walls of your home, no quests (at the moment), and would be nice to have some more "quality of life" features like maybe a craftable cart that players can push around or bigger bag sizes = more carry weight.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCJoPqKQ7JM

9. The Last Stand: Aftermath
A survival-themed zombie game that reminds me of State of Decay; minus all the base-building and managing - it's mostly scavenging and surviving here, though note that survival here also means that you need to get as many of the vaccine as possible to keep the infection at bay and not just not getting killed by zombies. Has plenty of background story, a nice variety of zombies and survivors, and randomly generated locations/travel map to keep things interesting. Definitely worth the closer look.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75U7aJOwQBI

10. Touch Type Tale
Interesting and rather unique concept for a typing-based strategy game where you'll need to manage both your resource-production and your troops ala RTS-style by typing random words. I personally find the game a bit on the difficult end and it's not the typing that's hard - it's the strategizing. Could probably use a bit more practice though!

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmyj01id7YU

11. TowerMancer
More of a clicker game IMHO. Here, you need to click and drag your imps around to "collect" materials and sending them to the construction sites around your tower while trying to fix a constant stream of damage dealt by your magical rivals.

I'm not a fan of such games as I often felt like my efforts are futile while playing the game since everything I do kept getting "reversed" by enemy spells, but I guess the game might be appealing to some.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odFiIl7fgAY

12. Medievalien
Action-based roguelike that has a generous loot-drop system, which I absolutely adore. Enemies seem well-varied in the demo (elite fights are fun IMHO); backtracking is kept to the minimum thanks to the teleportation system; and I love that I can customize each node in the map using Fate Shards which adds more strategy and less luck to each run.

The game feels rather easy though, but I think that's because the demo only includes the earlier nodes in the map.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn-7tv5PMVs

13. Highrisers
If you love playing Skyhill/ similarly-designed games, you'll definitely love this one. Unlike Skyhill, you control 4 characters in this game and can switch between them as you issue out orders. It's also more complex and features a pretty in-depth crafting and scavenging system. Gameplay isn't too difficult I'd say as long as you build and man barricades and don't get swarmed by the zombies/dreamers, especially at night.

The game's not perfect yet though since it still need to improve on some gameplay designs such as having a more organized stash/storage system and preventing characters from being idle far too often while you switch between characters to control, but overall, it's an entertaining demo experience.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5i77LimJEM
(Note that I encountered an odd bug at the end of my stream. Reported to the devs though and they are working on it :) )

14.Healing Spree
Completely impossible to play solo once you go beyond.. maybe the second level, but I don't fault the game - it's supposed to be a co-op game after all :P That said, I really like the concept and the medical theme, and once multiplayer is implemented, solo players can easily hop into a server and play with randos, much like what I did with Unrailed!

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0zGq-JhcXs

15. Zen World
A more strategic version of the hex-based city-builder like Dorfromantik. Played the sandbox mode twice and I quickly realized that it's not as easy to have enough tiles to continue playing. Can be either it's a difficulty issue or a balancing issue.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QD7P-rBiCS0

18. Obsidian Prince

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObYcF6zNkIA

19. Rise Eterna
Took me ages to figure out the controls apparently >< But that aside, the game seems to be a fairly standard tactics-based JRPG/strategy game without the emphasis on cover. However, the game seems glitchy in my playthrough as evident in the stream - you can see hit rating just suddenly bottoming out for no reason... even for enemies that aren't behind cover... but oddly enough, even with 0% hit rating, my characters can sometimes hit the enemy... so yeah, that's the only reason I manage to make it through to the end of the demo.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svR7SWpiLz0

20. Shores Unknown
I'm still on the fence about its grid-less turn-based gameplay because while it works, it feels incredibly odd and seems like it's more of a gimmick to help the game stand out, but I really like the story and the humour behind it so this is going into my wishlist regardless.

Plus, personally, I think that the first-person mode isn't particularly necessary - a top-down/isometric-style gameplay would work just as well - but it does provide a unique feel.

Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqo5YTyITZA

21. Festival Tycoon
I'm surprised the game didn't penalize me for basically lining the music festival with digital billboards just to cater to my sponsor overlords :P

That said, the game seems to have the basics in place and I did have some fun setting up a music festival in my playthrough, but I do think that there are huge rooms for improvement here. The tutorial could use some additions like pointing out that immovable table at the bottom of the screen is actually the "spawn spot" for the revellers or that the revellers also need rest areas - I thought they could just head back to their tents to rest.

[Archived] My Gaming Diary on SG
I thought I should compile all the stuff I've written in my SG GA descriptions just to document them.

- Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Master
Very strategic dungeon crawler, but in this game, you play as a "dungeon merc" where dungeon owners with treasures worth protecting will hire you to defend their dungeons from ambitious adventurers. Lots of stats to consider when deciding which traps to place or which units to deploy per dungeon room, and this makes for a very tactical gameplay. Needless to say, being a huge fan of turn-based strategy/tactics games in general, I absolutely had a blast playing this :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgcunJy3D5g

- 2064: Read Only Memories
A retro-style, point & click adventure game with superb voice acting, and a cyberpunk-themed story that delves into the topic of self-aware AIs and it comes with a James Bond-quality mystery too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfNBRiqnhPM

- Green: An Orc's Life
A gamebook-like adventure game that puts you into the bare greenish feet of a young but ambitious orc who aims to be one of the greatest! Doesn't have the best visuals though and it can be a tad bit pricey if you don't plan on replaying the game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgWMe5SxJxo

- Bloodlust 2: Nemesis
This game may not be the most polished, first-person dungeon crawler around, but the game is incredibly fun. Plus, like in Vampyr, you get to play as a vampire in this game but unlike Vampyr, you can sire a lot of fledgling vampire minions who will follow you around like roadies and help you attack your enemies. The voice acting - in the later parts - is pretty decent too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OX3rwAwGOds

- Trial of the Gods: Siralim CCG
A pretty cool and unique, hybrid game that combines elements from the board game, "Go", with CCGs. Matches are fairly short and sweet, and the game is very skill-based with little to no luck included mainly because unlike CCGs, you can see every card (6 in total) in your opponent's deck and the AI can see yours as well. It's all about outwitting the other side and making clever maneuvers to "trap" your opponent so you can earn more points.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrabYA3iN90
~Not my best play but I think you get the idea of what the game is all about~

- Artificial Extinction
A sci-fi-themed first-person tower defense game with some flashy explosions and cool camera effects.The game seems more like it's a beta or early access as there are bugs and the game crashed, which absolutely shouldn't happen in a newly released game, but it's very fun to play, I'll give it that :) Definitely worth a wishlist at least!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI6rZaPPkPo

- Hidden Through Time
A fun though short, Where's Waldo-style hidden object game that comes with a map editor so you can create your own maps and play other players' levels. Worth the asking price, especially if you're a fan!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnLpYhQ-Eoc

P/S: I've prepared a cheat sheet... ahem, guide too ^^

- WoMen in Science
An early access game that could use a bit more improvement, WoMen in Science is an educational farm simulation/RPG where you'll not only be managing and growing your farm; you'll also get to learn more about the various famous men and women in science, play some coding-related mini-games, and complete quests.

The Best of 2019 (Part 1)
2019 has been an incredibly fruitful year for the group I think :) We started from 1 member to over a 1000 now and I've been doing my best to write as many reviews as I could. I might need to change the system up a bit for the new year but I'll still do my very best to introduce to you all the latest and/or best indies, for as long as I possibly can.

Now, before I start listing games, I should say that this list only includes games that are released in 2019 (not only indies) and that I've had the privilege of playing them. Not all of them will have detailed full reviews - that's on me unfortunately - but they will all have a summary which you can access by clicking the game title as well as a gameplay video (YouTube link).

There are tons more that I didn't manage to cover due to time constraints, and I've also decided against adding in demos but I'll list them at the end as "Games to Watch".

Really hope I didn't miss any :P Here goes nothing!

RPG
Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones
- A pretty fantastic Lovecraftian RPG
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBXGbRE03l8

Honourable mention/s: Pine {YouTube}, Cat Quest 2 {YouTube}

Turn-based RPG/Strategy
Encased: A Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic RPG
- This game reminded me so much of old-school Fallout :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5pHNqPLFRE

Honourable mention/s: Grimshade {YouTube}; Element: Space {YouTube}; Spellinkers {YouTube}

P&C Adventure/Storytelling
Some Distant Memory
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f79s3UvRp1s

Honourable mention/s: Nordlicht {YouTube}; Deliver Us the Moon {YouTube}

Platformer
Dreadborne Drifters
- I really like its difficulty system, which makes the game a lot more accessible to all types of gamers, and its looter-shooter-style gameplay.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehom0X5v_qU

Honourable mention/s: Miscreation: Evolve Your Creature! (very interesting game because of its unique DNA/evolution-driven traits system, but the game's unfortunately rather buggy) {YouTube}

Visual Novel/VN-Style
Neo Cab
- You get to play from the perspective of an "Uber/ ride-share" driver in a futuristic city that is gradually being taken over by a massive corporation and its fleet of autonomous taxis. A very interesting game filled with dialogues and relevations that may make you think. Choices matter in this game too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eaFnpKCkQo {Playlist}

Puzzle
Voxelgram
- This puzzle game is not only so relaxing to play; it can also be challenging and solving every puzzle is just so rewarding since you'll get to reveal an object in a scene.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFIPoRqmTwA {Playlist}

Lots of Honourable Mentions (in no order): Traffix {YouTube}, Senna and the Forest {YouTube}, My Train Arrives {YouTube}, Maze {YouTube}, Railed {YouTube}, Total Party Kill {YouTube}; Fidelity (spot the difference... on steroids) {YouTube}; Terrorarium {YouTube}

Rhythm
AVICII Invector/ Songbird Symphony
- These two games tied because they are both equally fantastic for different reasons. The action rhythm gameplay is a lot more enjoyable in AVICII Invector because its easy mode isn't too hard, but Songbird Symphony has some of the best OSTs and a relatable story about a bird trying to find his place in the world.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZUE9cacwfo {Playlist}

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgeRsecVaLE

Honourable mention/s: Super Dodgeball Beats (game could use a more detailed tutorial; and the music is a 50:50 hit-and-miss for me... still fun though :) ) {YouTube}

Colony Management
Floatsam
- Game isn't completely developed yet but what I see so far is pretty good. Gameplay is actually challenging because it's not all about expanding your population.Every time you get new survivors, you need to balance out your colony's upkeep and resource production/scavenging first, get a net positive and THEN you're ready to recruit more people. Many people don't realize this in their first runs... not me though :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-YnxlglP_0

Honourable mention/s: Embark (love the game but it's currently really buggy) {YouTube}

Farm Sim
Verdant Skies/ Stranded Sails - Explorers of the Cursed Islands
- Both games are very different and yet similar at the same time. If you like My Life at Portia but you wish it has a bit more Visual Novel vibes, then Verdant Skies is more suited for you. Stranded Sails has a bit more top-down style and it focuses a lot on exploration rather than rep-grind (Verdant Skies). Both games has resource-grind - I'd say Verdant Skies will force you to grind for resources more than Stranded Sails.

My Time on Origin
Have been really pushing my Origin sub to the limit for the past 2 weeks! No regrets though since I've experienced some truly amazing games. I would recommend any one of the games I've played in a heartbeat!

This doesn't mean they are all flawless games but I had a lot of fun with them and if you're into that sort of games, you might enjoy playing them too ^^

Here's a recap of what I've managed to cover:

1. Vampyr
Completed an entire run of Vampyr on normal+without skipping the dialogues (as in "not a speedrun"), and I've got to say, this game has a really fantastic story to tell and your choices really have some severe consequences sometimes. I also totally ship those two love birds together (no spoilers, unless you want to spoil it for yourself by watching my long plays[www.twitch.tv], that is!

Plus, the souls-like gameplay here is something that I can actually get behind, unlike the actual Dark Souls series itself... ironically, and some other souls-likes - I'm looking at you, Outward!

My only regret is that I misunderstand what the game meant and picked the wrong choice for Nurse Dorothy. {SPOILER} ~I didn't mean to turn her into a Skal - I just wanted her to stop blackmailing my in-game "love interest" 😔 If I can replay the entire game again, I would definitely pick the "right choice" for Nurse Dorothy and try playing without sucking the blood out of any non-combat, named NPCs, no matter how terrible they are as digital people or how desperate I am for EXP 😛

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yURKlypCW3I

The only major downside for this game is the occasional crashes, but I'm not sure if that's a hardware issue on my end because streaming does take a toll on my poor laptop. And then, there's the combat controls as well - target lock is really bad here if you keep it on the entire time during fights. Might need to tab it on and off as necessary.

Oh, and if you plan on playing this game, quick tip - you'll want to try to max out your Endurance (the one that gives you more stamina) since every hit you make, every dodge you take... they'll eat up your stamina like mad.

2. Mass Effect: Andromeda
I know the game has had a lot of hate when it was first launched, but I'd like to think the game has improved a lot since then. The game feels good and plays well enough. It retains what makes a game "Mass Effect", at least that's what my opinion is.

Part 1: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/515565282

Besides the joy of getting to explore several gorgeous alien planets and locations, the story is pretty good as well. But I suspect some of the "choices" given don't really have an impact on the storyline, especially when it comes to the main storyline at least. The NPC will say what it needs to say to push forward the story regardless of which dialogue option you choose.

Interestingly though, they have removed the usual planet scanning/mining mechanics with something more "hands-on", which is all good and well, since driving around in the Nomad across alien planets is one of the best experiences ever! Controls are very smooth and realistic too - just try turning around on a completely-iced over lake and you'll know what I mean :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSiykdqOkMo

3. For the King
Tried For the King, which I absolutely enjoyed - huge fan of turn-based RPGs here - and I do plan on buying the game one day... I just need to figure out how to transfer my 6-hour-plus saved game from Origin over to Steam >.<

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qlpu04zZBb4

That said, this game is very unique and will definitely keep you on your toes constantly, mainly because of its VERY dynamic map. Sudden encounters are more frequent than I'd expect, and there are plenty of hazards to go around. The game does give me a bit of a Deep Sky Derelicts vibes too... for some reason, and it's probably not merely because it's a turn-based game.

Game's pretty long too and has a bit of a level grind to it, but if you play your moves right and have enough consumables, you should be able to take on enemies 1 or 2 levels above you - easy!

4. Home Behind
If you love games like This War of Mine and Displaced, you might want to check out Home Behind! It's perfectly midcore in terms of its difficulty and it offers lots of story snippets with an overarching storyline that hits you hard with a heartbreaking twist at the very end.

However, the game still has many parts where the texts aren't translated so you might miss out a bit.

5. Judgment: Apocalypse Survival Simulation
A colony management game that's set in a zombie apocalypse, Judgment has base building elements, lots of exploration with skippable "routine" combat, and real-time, top-down fights for special events and quests where you can push forward the story or simple rescue a fellow survivor to add to your growing colony.

Game has a lot of nuances that makes a great colony management game such as character skills and stats, and matching the right people with the right jobs. It's not really a super easy game to play either - you can definitely expect some challenges, especially once you've cleared all the easy scavenging sites and are forced to venture further = much tougher mobs.

5. Titanfall 2
The campaign is fairly short but amazing! I'd say the hype around this is real - definitely worth a play!

6. Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Haven't played this game yet but I've heard great things about its campaign as well. Worth a look :)
