After WW2 Europe was kinda ruined in more ways than one, but above all financially. It also had to start looking forwards to being the outermost bastion of the "Free World" in the Cold War. And moreover the Nazis and other fascists had more likely than not rendered most of the ideological justifications of the colonial empires sort-of hollow, so that when the assorted colonies started clamoring for their independence the Public Man's response was rather along the lines of "say why not...?", even if it occasionally took a bloody war to drive home the point.

Do recall that the British Empire was specifically at its greatest geographical extent after WWI, not in the least as it had absorbed many of the former German holdings. Probably the same as far as France goes, and Mussolini's Italy was waging a distinctly "colonial" war of conquest down in whatwasitnow, Ethiopia. I think the Spanish were also still fighting over territory with the natives in Morocco before they had their little civil war.

Of course, they were in hindsight at that point also teetering on the brink of collapse even if it wasn't apparent at the time. That the native adminstrators trained up to the standards of Western upper-level education were getting infected by the nationalism bug and developing all kinds of funny ideas didn't help too much.
