Virtual Console on Wii U

During today's Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed by Saturo Iwata that the Virtual Console will be launching on Wii U after the Spring update (we first heard about it a few days ago). The full line-up will take a while to become available, but a choice selection of classic Nintendo games (NES and SNES) will be released in the wake of the service's launch, and GBA titles are also coming.

If you already have a game on the Wii, and you would like to transfer it to your Wii U, you can, or you download it again at a discounted price. The original Wii games will continue to work, but for those who want to play their game on the Wii U GamePad, you'll have to purchase it again (albeit at the reduced price).

Balloon Fight, a game that Iwata worked on personally, will be the first title to arrive on the service.

Zelda coming to Wii U (Wind Waker?)

Another announcement from Nintendo Direct, and it's an exciting one. Nintendo are set to release a double helping of Zelda games for Wii U.

Saturo Iwata and Eiji Aonuma revealed that the team are re-thinking the conventions of Zelda, and are planning a new game to designed to challenge player expectations.

We didn't get a look at the new game, nor did we get a title, so we can assume it's a long way off completion. The keep us busy in the meantime, Nintendo are preparing to release a HD update of the tenth game in the series, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

During the presentation it was explained that their aim with The Wind Waker is to: tune up the overall game experience and upgrade graphics. We'll also be able to play off-TV, and it'll be Miiverse compatible. Fantastic news for Zelda fans.

Steam for Linux in beta

Steam has finally gone into beta on Linux, the open source operating system. Over 60,000 people applied to participate in the beta, with the first round of emails sent out to potential beta testers last week.

"This is a huge milestone in the development of PC gaming," said Valve's Gabe Newell. "Steam users have been asking us to support gaming on Linux. We're happy to bring rich forms of entertainment and our community of users to this open, customer-friendly platform."

Gamers using the OS will have access to over 20 titles, inclduing Team Fortress 2, World of Goo and Frozen Synapse. Head this way for the complete list of games available to Linux users on Steam.

3.5 million Assassin's Creed III

Ubisoft announced some positive results for their most recent quarter with full year projections being moved up slightly. One of the main reasons for this was healthy sales of Assassin's Creed III that has seen an estimated 3.5 million copies sold through to date, doubling the initial sales of Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Meanwhile, the Just Dance franchise is in "double digit decline" as Just Dance 4 fails to reach the numbers of Just Dance 3, but the performance is in line with what Ubisoft expected.

The Elder Scrolls Online in pics

There aren't a lot of huge MMORPG's on the horizon currently, but one we're keeping our eyes on is Zenimax Online Studios' The Elder Scrolls Online. An old school approach to dungeons paired with an interesting take on PvP are two features that got us excited back when it was announced, and here we have a bunch of fresh screens to look at.

Borderlands Legends next week

Borderlands Legends, the isometric action-RPG from Gearbox, is coming to iOS on October 31. The game features Mordecai, Lilith, Brick, and Roland from the first Borderlands, and will include loads of loot and RPG elements, but this time from an isometric perch. Legends will cost £2.99 on iPhone and £4.99 on iPad.

Walking Dead gets proper name

Yesterday, Activision announced the official title of the upcoming first person shooter game based on The Walking Dead (not to be confused with Telltale's brilliant episodic adventure). The name of the Terminal Reality developed game is The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

The game follows brother Merle and Daryl Dixon and their time following the outbreak and leading up to the events of the TV series. It's due out next year on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Child Labour at Wii U Factory

The working conditions at Chinese factory Foxconn have been scrutinised previously, and this time it seems the factory has been making use of school children ages 14 to 16. It is reported that they worked both overtime and nights.

While they were never forced to work by Foxconn, they were told by teachers that they would not get credit and risked relegation if they refused to work.

"I did transport work, helping them move goods," a 14-year old boy told Chinese National Radio (via Kotaku "Right now, the night shift is 7:40 PM until the morning... you know, til what time in the morning is uncertain. Whenever the work is done is when you get off your shift. If you don't finish the work, he (the production line foreman) won't let you end your shift. Usually, you can get off by 7 AM. My arms would hurt from the work."

It should be noted that while the conduct isn't in violation of Chinese labour laws, Foxconn are looking into the issue as it violates their policies. Nintendo are also investigating the issue.

Ride dragons in Skyrim?

Beta testers of Skyrim 1.8 have found evidence in the code about what the next DLC will feature. It seems it may be called Dragonborn (trademark already registered), and it seems you may be able to mount dragons and ride them in the expansions. There is also evidence that suggests parts of neighbouring Morrowind will be unlocked in the DLC. The findings were reported on the official Bethesda boards (via OXM).

As usual DLC for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is first released on Xbox 360, with PC coming a month later or thereabouts - and PS3, well, hopefully they'll get DLC at some point. There is no official word on when to expect the next Skyrim DLC at this point in time.
