The verification involves two small authorizations being placed on the credit card. The authorizations never clear and will always remain in the pending state and eventually disappear on their own. To verify the card, you enter the amount of the two authorizations.
Correct, the site only showed the CAD amount in the transaction history (and didn't have any USD/CAD conversion information from my brief searches on its site).
No. You're not forced to verify the card and you can use a perfectly fine card and then revoke the purchase anyway.
