1. Go to your Steam settings and go to the 'Friends' tab.
2. Uncheck the box next to 'Automatically sign into Friends when i start Steam'
3. When a spam-wave hits, exit steam and restart it. This should leave you as appearing offline, though you still are, online. Appearing offline causes no notifications to display until you sign back into friends, via the friendslist.
Then, just wait out the storm.
