It's true 'woke' has been around for many decades, but in games it has been very rare until around 10 years ago or so. In a way it was the last 'entertainment' industry to be hit by it.

It doesn't make sense that a machine has a gender, because it's a machine, and saying something without a gender, (like a machine) is non-binary sounds like woke.
