If you donate to a dev or artist on patreon, you are not just a fan.

Patrons Are Not Just Fans!

If your money is leaving your hand every month to support a game, you are not merely a fan. You are funding the project. In many cases, you are helping fund the developer’s life while that project is being made.

That means you have the right to expect results.

You are their boss now.

You dont control the art and vision, but you have leverage and the right to ask:

What is being made?
When is it expected?
What has actually been completed?
What changed if the date slipped?
Why is there no public roadmap?

Do not let vague “weekly updates” fool you. A post that says “still working,” “almost done,” or “episode progress continues” is not accountability.

A real roadmap tells you what will be delivered and when. Dates matter more than percentages.

Your money is not fairy dust. It is labor from your life turned into someone else’s income. Treat it that way.

You are funding their life and their game. They either honor that, or you fire them by de-funding them.

F95 Zone and Steam Community Moderation. Why talk about it?

F95 Zone is a major forum in the adult VN space where releases, updates, timelines, and monetization are publicly discussed.

When F95 Zone is mentioned in Steam community hubs, those references are often removed through developer or moderator action.

Because of this, F95-related context is documented on this curator page, not in developer-controlled hubs.

Independent of Steam.

Legal to reference.

Widely used by VN players.

Its quite the website. A lot of stuff, and many Devs talk there, especially among each other.
How some devs make thousands of $$$ despite only having 1 game or 1 in production.

⚠️ The System:

1. Patreon Income Based on "Development" — Not Delivery

Monthly tiers ($5–$100+) generate steady income

No deadline. No pressure. No finished product

“Coming Soon” = Infinite farming window

2. Sexy Renders Are the Real Product

One pin-up per week = content

“Polls” = fake agency

“Custom renders” = fake intimacy

Patrons pay to feel involved, not to get a game

3. Discord and Parasocial Loops

Locked servers = gated community

High tiers get “roles,” “access,” or even “in-game cameos”

Users pay for proximity to the dev, not development

4. No Roadmap, No Milestones

“Art takes time” used as a shield

Updates = excuses, not progress

Any critique dismissed as “harassment” or “negativity”

5. Fake Legitimacy Through Steam Presence

One “Coming Soon” page adds credibility

Used to point traffic to Patreon

Game may never ship—doesn’t need to, because the real income is from dangling the promise

💀 The Result:

$3K–$8K/month with no released product

Patreon treated like a subscription trap for renders and emotional validation

Devs rely on fans staying silent and critics staying banned

🧱 The Truth:

This isn’t indie game dev.
It’s digital emotional extraction.

And we’re done pretending it’s art.

About This Group – Read First

Visual Novel Development Watch exists to bring transparency to the VN scene.
Our goal is simple: to help supporters understand development patterns, track update consistency, and recognize common warning signs that appear in long-term or season-based visual novel projects.

We focus on documenting publicly available information, including:

update frequency and development timelines

roadmap changes

communication history

engine switches and rewrites

patterns commonly seen in stalled or abandoned projects

positive examples of reliable and consistent development

This group does not harass developers or accuse anyone of crimes.
We present evidence-based patterns and development history so supporters can make informed decisions about which projects they support.

Our community resources include:

checklists for evaluating projects

guides for new supporters

breakdowns of common PR statements used during delays

red flag pattern lists

examples of legitimate, trustworthy developers

discussions on best practices for transparency

Everyone is welcome to contribute — just keep discussion factual, respectful, and based on verifiable information.
