I would not say ignorance as much as over confidence, Lee thought he could simply bash through the Union lines and he failed to see that the Union position on the hights was simply not going to fold, Lee's over confidence in his men hindered his own better judgment even when it was suggested to him to forget a frontal assault and out flank the entire Union line by fainting towards Washington which would have most likely forced General Meade off the high ground to try an meet the threat, leaving Union forces in more flat open ground, enabling Confederate troops to be used in a manouevor battle for which Lee was best at.

Well not entirely that Lee thought that his cavalry could break through the rear and didnt wait for confirmation and decided to attack without confirmation. Also this could be considered Stewarts fault also since he did outnumber custer's men and were better experienced but decided to call it off mainly due to coming back from other raids on union supply lines and the men were tired. While a winnable battle for the south their downfall was due to ignorance and lack of trust.

I know why Lee ordered Pickett's Charge (saw it in a movie) day 2 of gettysburg, the CSA attaced the Union's flanks in an attempt to defeat the army from the rear. results of Big Round Top, slauter of the Confederate troops, results of Little Round Top, Union hold by a hair with a baenat charge, defeating the CSA there. Lee thought, since the union held when they attacked the flanks, that the center must be the weak point. He thought that if he sent enough troops, that the union line would fall, only to find enough union cannons to survive the South's bombardment and a stone wall where many union troops shoot from cover, they were pushed back a little, and then drove the CSA out. Lee was devstaded by the order he had given to his men saying, "This loss is my loss, it is entirely my fault."

Don't forget about Phil Sheridan. Thomas "The Rock of Chickamauga" was another worthy Union general in the East. These were two of my favorites. It would have been interesting had Jackson survived the tragedy of Chancelorsville to see them go head to head in the Shenandoah Valley towards the end of the war.

Oh dont worry Sergant Major, theres no need to give me a history lesson, my only point in saying that Grant and Sherman are the only real options is simply because Grants fame from leading the Army of the Cumberland and of course Shermans march ripped the heart out of the south, they are credited with winning the war for the Union, but the south had far better Generals, they were tacticly brilliant in there battles, although we may never know why Lee continued to press the attack with pickets charge even after the attack on culps hill failed and the flanking move by the conferderate cavalry was blocked by General Custers men, but even so, the skill of the Confederate Generals is what forced the Union into a war of attrition.

well, the most known Union generals were fighting in the east, where the war was mainly fought. Then, Grant, who had attracted Lincoln's attention from his succes fighting the Confederation in the West and taking the Mississipi River, went East. Sherman also fought in the South East, leading the second most successful campaign on the Union's part. See the patern, generals in the West, who stayed in the West, aren't really known, most generals aren't known, period.

I know he was, im just tryin out names, it just that I cant decide who ill be in our comming civil war. Either way, the Union didnt have as good a Generals as the South so its hard to pick, it kinda seems like Grant or Sherman are the only 2 choices cuz they were the only Union Generals that were good.
