If you're talking "real life" then yeah, both of you are somewhat correct but as far as the game is concerned. (And these apply to real-life as well)
A novice is the lowest form, entry-level magic.
Above a novice, is an apprentice (someone who is undergoing training at a higher level)
A Journeyman is above both novice and apprentice, being entrusted with their own crafts and skill developments.
Above a journeyman is an expert, someone who is entirely capable of their own craft or skill without prior tutelage from a master.
A master is self-explanatory, someone who has mastered their craft and can take on novices and apprentices of their own.
The ranking would be as follows
Legendary
Master
Expert
Adept
Apprentice
Journeyman/novice
