For what it's worth i'm making clips out of War Thunder gameplay. Whatever is going on, it probably doesn't have to do with the game. Hopefully steam finds what is causing it - it's been working perfectly for like a week or two prior to this.
The older recording works fine, and it seems a new recording (booted the game up for like 30 seconds) does too.
Would appreciate if anyone knows a fix for this within Steam, or a solid workaround to clip from this bugged recording in another way.
- I could make the clips and see the markers fine when I was making them quickly after the event whilst playing the game (i.e. it worked within the Steam overlay with no delay or short delay)
- Clips made within the overlay longer after the clipped event were lacking the markers within the clips I made, even though the markers were still present within the recording that I was taking them from.
- After closing the game I was able to make several more clips without markers in them, but then markers disappeared on the entire recording as well and the issue was fully present again preventing me from making the last clips I wanted to make.
Although I lack a decent sample size to make conclusive statements, the current best practice seems to be making the clips directly after the event or as soon as possible within the Steam overlay and preferably also before you close the game.
Or at least give an update that you're working on it, I don't want to go back to f*cking gamebar
- Use the recording in background setting.
- And clip things from the current recording in the Steam Overlay before closing the game. (Preferably as soon as possible after the event you wish to clip - just to be sure, but also because if the markers disappear it's harder to find the event later.)
- And make the clip with the beginning and ending as the desired final result. (Nearly all clips get bugged too, so you can't edit/save a portion from the clip later).
I have had no issues exporting clips that I saved in the above way.
Without exception, all recordings have become bugged not long after closing the game. I'd guess they last several hours at most. When they still worked it seemed they might get bugged sooner if you interact with / clip from them outside the game (overlay).
I don't use manual recording, so cannot advise regarding that option.
All in all this is still quite annoying, so fingers crossed for a fix soon.
Best of luck all
This is probably best advice. My problems were when I clipped outside the game overlay/post session. I can confirm my session recordings expire usually the day after the session, but in some odd instances expire within earlier. Thanks zwa!
