Feature Request: Disable recording on per-game basis
I would like to be able to disable recording on specific games for two main reasons.

-Some games are likely to not have anything worth recording in them, such as incremental games, or other casual grind games. Its a waste of drive space/writes on games like this.
-Might have performance issues on specific games, whether it be due to game incompatibilities or lower end PC hardware.

It feels like it would be useful to have this as a toggle within a games properties window.

Although I have found for games you dont want it turned on, just disable the entirety of Steam Overlay, which you can already do per game.
This should still be an option tho especially for Steam Deck / Big Picture where the lack of an overlay means you have less ways to close out of a frozen/stuck game.

Also, would be good to set all games to either enabled or disabled (in background recording mode), and then just change the ones you want to be different. For example, I really only have 1 game where I would want recording on, so I would start with all/default = disabled and only enable that 1.

Constantly writing to disk wears it down, i don't want that to be for games i don't care to clip

This would greatly appreciated

I have actually avoided playing certain games of late, because I don't want it recording them.

Big agree, games like vampire survivors or powerwash sim, i'm not clipping those. It would also be great to set max lengths for background recordings per game. Like for Halo i might want the entire last two hours saved, but for Final Fantasy i might only want the last 15 minutes.
+1 from me, it's pointless in some games, but I don't want the feature disabled in general.

I'd like this too. I'm using Lossless Scaling to do frame generation on games like Elden Ring. If you start Lossless Scaling first (or keep it running between games, or you restart a game, or it crashes...), you won't get any recordings for the actual games you're playing. It just tries to grab Lossless Scaling -- which, to add insult to injury, it doesn't seem to be able grab, as it always yields "No recording available"!

This is also useful for games that you already marked as private - if you're hiding it from people, you probably don't want video evidence on your device, either.

This has since been added. Thanks Steam!

You can configure it via [right click on game] -> Properties -> Game Recording -> Background Recording

I like this idea, just disable all games and choose which games you want recorded

Would love to:
- select background recording
- “All other games”: do not record (not possible yet)
- few games with different lengths

Thanks, this will help a lot for now.

My reasoning is apparently different from some other participants. lmao

But I'm glad to see you can disable it for specific games. I didn't want to turn it on for CS and disable it for Oblivion Remastered every time. The performance hit was crazy.

The feature I want is for recording to just be off by default for all games. Right now if have game recording turned on, it just records every game automatically until I OPT OUT for each game. I can tell it to NOT record in the background for different games, but what I want is for the background recording feature to be on and functional, but to not start keeping the background recording until I tell it to turn it on for a game. It kinda works the opposite right now and it's really annoying. I don't want literally every app to record in the background, but I don't want to have to manually record the games I do want.
