if this didn't help you then right click steam icon in status bar -> big picture -> settings -> find the beta option and disable it

My cmd didn't want to accept Program Files since there's a space, but the big picture workaround that Lokalizator posted worked for me

If this does not work do this:
When its open even with the error screen, right click on the icon in your taskbar and select big picture mode, within the mode go to settings, then system, then find the beta option and select "no beta chosen", it will restart and update, then just open it.

Going into big picture mode and disabling the beta worked for me. Using millennium and i thought that was the cause, but my theme still works great on the regular branch of steam.

I have mine looking like 2003 steam :) (For those wondering, yes steam does approve of using it and even recommended it at one point)
