Steam Overlay bug?
I'm definitely certain that this is a game issue but possibly a Steam Client update could help fix this.

In my copy of Team Fortress 2, I can only use the Steam Overlay for a few seconds. Here's what happens:

1. I open the game and press Shift + Tab.
2. The overlay opens and is usable for a few seconds.
3. About 10 seconds later (varies, sometimes longer I'm able to use it) the overlay simply disappears and I'm returned to my game. Shift + Tab again doesn't open the overlay.
4. As I forget about this and continue to play, the overlay continues to "flicker" on and off (sometimes it will simply reappear for a second and disappear again) interrupting gameplay. I have to kill "gameoverlayUI.exe" in the task manager to stop this.
5. If I haven't killed the process, when I alt tab out and look at the game (in borderless windowed mode - no fullscren does not help) I can see the overlay completely. Tabbing back in lets me use it for as long as I like until I press Shift Tab again, and am unable to reopen it.

I've noticed it has to do with either aspect ratio or resolution. I run a 1366x768 monitor and if i set my aspect ratio to 4:3 (800x600), the problem disappears entirely.

Yes, I've tried Steam Support who gave me a list of troubleshoots that didn't help in the end. I've reinstalled the game. Nothing works.

I've had this game for several years and haven't run into the bug before. Others have though apparently as I looked online and found several topics with questions on how to fix the bug, but no answers.

I had this issue when the beta updates started rolling out again just before the Summer Sale. It's been pushed to the main client now and causing issues, Steam also takes a core, the overlay process stays around after a game is closed, etc.

I haven't experienced the bug for a few weeks, I think I tried a complete Steam wipe and clean reinstall (saving games of course) which did the trick, if not that I installed a custom Steam skin that may have worked.

I still have this problem in the latest beta client, also when I play games while using the in-game browser it does the same thing as the TF2 bug. It's open for a few seconds and closes when I move the mouse.

It happens in the Ccounter Strike 1.6 To ....... i just oppen a new Discusion.

Screen flickering may be occurring because your OS is running out of system resources.
The Steam client consumes a lot of system resources.
Many PCs have experienced a mysterious issue that can be resolved by turning off the Steam overlay.
You may need to put the Steam client on a diet until the Steam overlay can coexist.
