Steam Background Recording: Excessive Storage Usage Bug Report
ISSUE

Steam background recording exceeds the set 8GB maximum storage limit, occupying up to 32GB of space. However, only the video content matching the preset recording duration is playable, and no additional video files corresponding to the extra storage usage can be found.

OS

Windows 11 24H2

STEAM CLIENT INFORMATION

- Steam Beta Branch: Stable Client

- Steam Version: 1763757504

- Steam Client Build Date: Friday, November 21, 9:24 UTC-08:00

- Steam Web Build Date: Saturday, November 22, 4:00 UTC-08:00

- Steam API Version: SteamClient023

STEPS

1. Launch the Steam client and log into my account.

2. Navigate to Steam Settings > In-Game > In-Game Background Recording.

3. Set "Maximum Storage Used" to 8GB and configure the desired recording duration (e.g., 30 minutes) as per normal settings.

4. Launch a game (any game supporting Steam background recording) and start gameplay.

5. Let the Steam background recording run in the background during gameplay for a period matching the preset duration.

6. Exit the game and return to the Steam client.

7. Access the Steam recording library to check the recorded video.

8. Select the recorded video, click "Stop Recording" (if not automatically stopped), and then choose the "Delete Recording" option.

RESULTS

- When checking the storage usage via my device's file manager, the Steam background recording folder occupies approximately 32GB of space, which is 4 times the set 8GB limit.

- In the Steam recording library, only the video content corresponding to the preset recording duration (e.g., 30 minutes) can be played; no additional video files or content accounting for the extra ~24GB storage can be located.

- When selecting "Delete Recording," the system pop-up correctly displays the total storage occupancy of the recording as 32GB, consistent with the actual storage usage detected by the device.

EXPECTED

1. Steam background recording should strictly adhere to the set 8GB maximum storage limit, and the actual storage usage should not exceed this threshold.

2. The storage space occupied by the recording should match the playable video content; there should be no unaccounted-for excessive storage consumption.

3. The storage occupancy displayed when deleting the recording should be consistent with the preset limit and the actual playable content size.
