@knowkas - for pixel textures photoshop, and for vector graphics illustrator; these are the main apps I use but these days there are much better value alternatives, some are even free

@LuXy - I can't comment on chances I am not privy to the selection process. I can only say that in general I see pattern skins as lower tier as the application process is less bespoke / applied to a variety of weapons. Also in my opinion - lower tier items get less attention but are still required for cases so it would make sense to spend energy creating both instead of the common approach of workshoppers to present only higher tier submissions. One thing I often did was make three options for bespoke skins, one of which would be less salient with lower tiers in mind.

@The Honey Badger - I can see that. So you would say they both have equal "chances" if you could even call it that. What about in terms of tiers? Is it smarter to create things designed to be lower tier skins in cases since there are more slots for those? Thank you for answering btw

@LuXy - both are needed, both have points for and against. I preferred making what you called 'artwork' as pattern is less discerning toward the UV issues. However I did make the Ziggy pattern in which case a lot of time was spent building up an interesting composition, then I applied it across many skins which I felt did not suffer to badly with the UV issues. I then furthered the offering later on with a few colour variants, one of which was successful.

Hey I am curious on whether it makes more sense to create pattern based skins or artwork skins when it comes to valve accepting them. Pattern based skins ofcourse allow you to create a lot more from one pattern since it can be applied on all guns and have different colored versions. However I would like to know what your experience is?:jawagrin:

@ 𝙇𝙪✘𝙮 - yes, various applications allow you to project an image onto a gun then bake it to the UVs. If you go to here there is a page full of FAQs about workshop skins... see the section: 'Is there an easier way to apply art onto a gun?/ What is this projection I've heard of?'

Also as a new workshopper this guide might be helpful: here [overpay.guide]

Personally I use a very old version of Cinema 4D to camera map onto a weapon, but there are much better software solutions for this more catered to skin design.

I am kinda new to this skin designing thing, and i am currently working on a p250 skin. I noticed that when you made the Glock-18 Weasel you had a drawing of it before it was put on the gun. Is there a way of putting a picture on the model itself instead of drawing it onto the UV sheet? Since i have already drawn it to match the size of the p250. Thanks

@BaM-✖ cs.money - probably not. I like to tie ideas to weapons where possible: the P90 was specifically chosen because it fires them out haphazardly like a swarm.

Thx for the reply. Yeah - need to come up with a stellar skin to get noticed - so many fantastic ones published all the time. Helps if you already have an accepted skin too I guess. :steamhappy: Pretty much only have a 24 hour window to show up as it appears that the "Popular" and "Most Recent" pages reset every 24 hours at midnight GMT. After this if you only get a few views you are gone - need consistent views over a few days to stay on the front page.
Realised that the chance of getting picked is lottery odds sized - now I just make skins that amuse me and hope others get some enjoyment from them.

I get low views on submissions too -- I'm not sure how some take off. I'd guess the really high view counts are caused by a combination of the following: a high volume of positive ratings (90%+ ?); appearing in users activity feeds from rating and favouriting; getting to the top of the workshop so that it is seen from the games library front page must help. The workshop voting queue must also play a part but I'm not sure how that works ...I'm totally guessing here. Why one submission takes off and another flounders is a mystery to me. I just post, then watch them sink or swim.
My advice: dont sweat the stats too much, the stats are useful for evaluating an audiences receptiveness to a given product, however your best bet is to just focus on what you have control of -- making each submission as good as it can be.

Hey,

Fairly new to this weapon skinning stuff: your work blows me away. Going back through it, I really like the M4A4 | Modular [MK I] - it's very "clean" and suits the M4A4 which looks a difficult weapon to skin in a lot of detail. How on earth do you get 40-60K views for some of your work? I'm lucky to get 500-600 before my stuff sinks into the abyss - maybe I should change my name to HoneyGuppy :steamhappy:
