Admin Announcement

Fellow Debaters,

The time has come for a revival of this group.

The Political Blogging Society was once a great group where spirited debates on a wide variety of topics could take place. Together we shall restore this group to its former glory.

Currently the group is undergoing construction in order to prepare it for more members and debates. If you have any suggestions please leave them in the Suggestions Forum.

Best to all of you,

Ferdinand
Announcement [Admin]

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This group has been inactive throughout the year and most of last year, as the founder of it I cannot express my sadness at such developments. But I also realize it is partly the fault of myself and the other moderating figures of this group.

Thus, in an effort to rebuild such a group and the great spirit of debate that it stood for, I am asking for a check of those still interested in participating and those that are possibly willing to help moderate the group.

Only together, can we rebuild the PBS to the stature it once stood at. I thank you all for your time.

~| Morsi Overthrown In Egypt |~

Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected leader, has been decisively ejected from power after the army flooded the streets of Cairo and announced a new interim government.
Mr Morsi, who had earlier refused to resign, was told at 7pm local time he was no longer president as Egypt’s military seized control in a coup.
As the streets of Cairo erupted in jubilation, Gen Abdulfattah al-Sisi, the head of the army, made a televised address to the nation accusing Mr Morsi of rejecting calls for national dialogue.
Backed by the main religious leaders, Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University, and Pope Tawadros II of the Coptic Church, he said the military was taking up its “patriotic duty to the Egyptian masses”.
Gen Abdulfattah al-Sisi, made a televised address to the nation accusing Mr Morsi of rejecting calls for national dialogue Photo: AFP
He announced a political road map suspending the constitution, forming an interim government, and leading to elections. He appointed chief justice of the constitutional court, Adly Mansour, interim president with “full powers of decree”.

A Muslim Brotherhood spokesman claimed Mr Morsi was being held by the authorities. The Egyptian police was reportedly given orders to arrest 300 leaders and members of the Brotherhood, according to the state-run newspaper Al-Ahram. Earlier, two senior Brotherhood leaders were detained, according to security officials.
The leaders of Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood party were banned from leaving the country, with airports put on alert. Local media reported that Mohammed Badie, the group’s Supreme Guide, was turned back from the Libyan border.
Mohammed Morsi (AP)
The plug was pulled on a Brotherhood television station, and Al-Jazeera’s local station was raided. Mr Morsi was last night said to have been moved to an undisclosed location. He had earlier been rumoured to be inside the buildings of the Republican Guard. He denounced the move as “illegal” and urged Egyptians to “peacefully resist the coup as he himself will do”. Later a pre-recorded tape was played to supporters near the presidential palace in which he said he was still president and asked them to defend his “legitimacy”.
The opposition leader, Mohamed ElBaradei, was consulted in advance of the announcement, which was met with fireworks by crowds in Tahrir Square and outside the presidential palace.
Mr Morsi had held talks with Gen Sisi, the defence minister, during the day, but pulled out at lunchtime after it became clear he was not going to be able to cling to office.
Mohammed Elbaradei was consulted in advance of the announcement (AFP)
As dusk fell, convoys of troops poured through the centre of the capital. Armoured personnel carriers took up position on bridges. They were cheered as they passed anti-Morsi protesters. In the north-west suburb around the presidential palace soldiers set up barriers to keep pro-Morsi demonstrators away from the Republican Guard buildings, where Mr Morsi was rumoured to be holding out or under house arrest.

~| The EU: A Good Thing Or A Bad Thing |~

I personally believe that the benefits are outweighed by the cons. I shall state the pros and cons in this announcement:

Benefits:
-Free trade agreements, easier for mutual economic prosperity (eliminates Protectionism)
-Easier to travel through Europe
-Cooperation on military and foreign matters
-Strengthens Europe as a continent to act as some sort of counter-weight between the emerging powers and America
-Easier for businesses to operate
-Common currency means it's easier to facilitate financial integration and interaction

Disadvantages:
-All countries are forced to sign up to the same stringent structural reforms
-Too much power in domestic affairs (they can even tell states when not to have elections because their plans for reform of their economies may be put into jeopardy, lol!)
-Brussels can overrule any decisions taken by individual states on Europe-wide grounds, showing contempt towards the opinions of any individual nation
-Sets targets that not all nations may be able to reach
-Is a disadvantage towards strong nations as the weaker nations pull the stronger ones down (Germany having to help Greece, etc)
-Has unrealistic goals
-Is dictatorial in the way it manages Europe
-Concerted efforts can be made against one country if they don't step into line (or even to attack places like Africa, the Middle East or Asia in foreign affairs)
-Easy immigration means mass migration to places like Britain, Germany, France, Sweden etc, which jeopardises national economies as migrant workers take jobs simply because they will accept less money than native workers, which is grossly unfair

So...there you have it. Make up your own mind whether the EU is good or not :)

What do I think personally? That the EU is not all that great. The benefits are outweighed by the disadvantages, and in its goal for a united European continent, the European Union completely ignores individual national interests, national issues and national mindsets, deluded, as it is, in the belief that all these can be transcended by one "European" patriotism, which is just not possible. And with many Western European nations become more multicultural, we see things like Islamic extremism/terrorism, segregated communities (mainly because the whites move out when the migrants move in), racism, crime and other issues which have a bad effect on Europe as a whole and shatters the facade that is the "progressive" European plan. I feel that there should be limited cooperation but NOT the great European nation-state that the Brussels elite envisage. It is unrealistic, costly and only benefits a few nations. Look at the countries that joined the EU, and used the Euro, who are probably wishing they hadn't.

Margaret Thatcher: 1925-2013

This morning, former British Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher died from a stroke at the age of 87.

What is your opinion of her life? Her legacy? Her performance as Prime Minister. She was a very controversial figure, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

- Alex

"Gun Control" USA what do you think?

Hello, for a while now I have been pondering this issue whether we (American citizens) should be allowed to own "Assault Rifles" (not clearly deffined)? After many hours of thought I have came to the conclusion yes we should be allowed to own them. Here is the reasoning; assault rifles have more uses than you may think such as hunting (yes you can hunt with them), competative shooting, recreational shooting, and self-defence. All of what is listed thereof dosent matter though because that is not why the 2nd admendment was put in place. It was put in place so the citizens could protect themselfs from the government in case it became tyrannical. Many might not know the police have no obliggation to protect you as was rules by the Supreme Court 7/15/05 SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES No. 04-278 TOWN OF CASTLE ROCK, COLORADO, PETITIONER v. JESSICA GONZALES. Your safetly is your personal problem if you want to go and buy an assault rilfe or just have a 9mm its up to you not the government.
The reason the founding fathers put in the second admendment was to protect the people; they knew the problems with a centrilized government and its tyrannical tendencies James Madison was clear when he said in the Federalist Papers the intention for the second admendment was for the people to be as heavily armed as the government this cannot be the case in todays world but the ratio of which guns should be allowed to the public should be atleast resonable we shouldnt be restricted to bolt action rifles and shotguns when the military is using drones, M16s etc Even though some may say "the US military has drones, nukes, tanks, jets, a navy, CIA, etc. What would make you think we stand a chance against them even with assault rifles?" The answer is: Have you looked in the news where still in Afganistan and its been 12 years and guess what the terrorists dont have a standing army, navy, air force, espionage agency (CIA grade), tanks, nukes etc; and they are not limited to handguns, bolt action hunting rifles, limited clips. What they do have is a idea; a fundemental purpose (although I dont agree with it for the sake of debate im using it) and it goes to show that no matter the odds people will fight for what they believe in. Now if the Afghan people were limited in their ability to own weapons this war would have been long over. P.S. I hate when gun control advocates bring up the fact the USA has nukes.... so what, how stupid do you think the govenment is even if the USA does blatantly turn against its people it would never use a nuke on its own country thats just idiocity because it would destory infastructure, environment, and leave the area completly devestated with fallout going all over not to metion we never have even contemplated using them since the Cold War and another gun control saying if every one had nukes it just be madness. One even if people were allowed to own nukes no private company would even try to manufacture them considering the price in terms of resources needed to sell and massivly produce them would be enormous. even if the compnay overcame this giant hurdle the retail price would be so high only people like Bill Gates could afford. Second you can already do this any compnay can just head over to the Western Sahara and set up a nuke shop (No laws in western sahara no one offically owns it) but considering it has not happened yet, it will unlikely happen in the future (but who knows). I have alot more to say, but I dont want to fill up my writing space or scare people from reading this long babble. So what do yuo think?

Good videos about gun control
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZo4hbGJjVI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi6gZU01yF8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQYCXhIeajI

New Ottoman Empire?

Yes you heard me right according to Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert a new Ottoman Empire has formed.

his words: "Thank you President Borack Hussein Obama. He has helped jump start a new Ottoman Empire. You look across the Tunisia, Libya, and Eygpt, Iraq, and Iran, Syrian, and Lebanon. You look across it and you go oh my god this is the beginning a massive beginning of a new Ottoman Empire that President Obama can take credit for."

I think my good friend Stephen Colbert can take over for me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78hiJ4ZPOGk&playnext=1&list=PL4D8F852A96A09C4A&feature=results_video

Question to you: What do you all think of the Arab spring and revolutions in the Middle East? People finally wanting to be free of Cruel decades long Dictatorship? Or evil 90 year long conspiracy to revive the lost Ottoman Empire and destroy Israel!

~| One Year Since Gaddafi's Death |~

And Libya is in chaos. Congratulations to the West.

The new Libyan Congress can't even set up a government, have sacked their PM and installed a new one, who looks like he'll fail to set up a government too, armed gangs still roam the desert, towns with Gaddafi loyalists are being ethnically cleansed and destroyed, their inhabitants slaughtered. Bani Walid has been retaken by Gaddafi loyalists (:D) and will hopefully hold out the siege against the NTC rats and dogs that are besieging the city. Al-Qaeda has entered Libya and Tuaregs that fought alongside the rebels in Libya are now flooding into Northern Mali, which is now practically an al-Qaeda run state. The country is flushed with weapons and people die every day. The US Ambassador has just been killed and everywhere in Libya its madness. Congratulations, NATO. Congratulations.

P.S. Ask the people of Iraq if they are better off now without Saddam. You know what the answer will be ;)
