Traincarft steel is easier to make than iron in a blast furnace and they both work for recipes that need steel.
step 1) make a 2x2 block of coal in a crafting table
step 2) surround a clay ball in the coal dust
step 3) put the item in crafting table, middle bottom, then fill the middle row (horizontally) with iron
