~| Belgium, Awake From Your Long Slumber! |~

Today we commence the opening of this most glorious nation. On such an occasion as this, we gather together to precipitate what shall be a truly national awakening. The fair damsel Belgium has awoken from her long slumber, and it is now the duty of all true patriots to ensure that Belgium is placed on the map!

We do not fear the insignificant rabble that surrounds us for we know that the heart of dear Belgium is stout and determined, and smacks of a courage that is only exhibited by lions!

The people of Belgium have participated in bringing about such a momentous occasion. Our national ascendancy has begun. Let the hearts of our foes quake within their chests, and let Belgium's name resound through the heavens, immortal!

Our armies march, eternally victorious. Our people are showered with glory, our king is crowned with the laurel wreath.

Belgium has awoken, resplendent in all her glory!

Long live Belgium!

Signed,
-Comrade Idi, Minister of Propaganda of Belgium

Ninety-eighth Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

The Armenian genocide was one of the most massive "root-and-branch" exterminations ever carried out against a defenseless people. In 1915, as World War I raged, the Turkish government (ruler of the Ottoman Empire) decided upon the systematic extermination of most of the male Armenian population, and the forced deportation of the remainder, mostly women, children, and the elderly. The deportation became a death march, with extreme violence and deprivation leading to the death of most of the survivors of the initial gendercide -- as was intended. By the time the exhausted and traumatized survivors reached refuge in neighbouring countries, up to three-quarters of the entire Ottoman Armenian population had been exterminated.

~| The Tyranny of the Majority |~

This latest bill proposed by the ruling party on the rights of Parliament risks turning this nation into a tyranny of the majority whereby, compelled by the whims of the mercurial disposition of an impatient and ill-disciplined people, the Parliament is a mere rubber-stamp for bad decisions and poor governance. Parliament must not be a pawn of the people, but it must be a strong tool of state, an instrument through which the government can rule the people. The King must have a say in the day-to-day running of state, have the right to prorogue Parliament and call new elections, or delay the convening of a new Parliament until such time as he sees fit. He should also be allowed to bring a State of Emergency into effect when the nation is at war or in a time of political crisis or instability and in so doing shall be given extra-constitutional powers which should include the power to sign into effect new laws by decree. Nevertheless, this move would be made to be within reason as the King would only be allowed to bring this into effect once every month.

What do you think?

~| The Rights of the King |~

The Belgian Monarchist Party has observed the section of the constitution that pertains to the rights of the King with much detail, and it is has come to our attention that the King has not been given a sufficient amount of power commensurate with his role.

Now, the Liberal-Conservative Party is of the view that the Belgian monarchy is a Constitutional one brought into effect by virtue of the people, and that the monarch should be nothing more than a figurehead, a rubber-stamp of the nation's will. We do not take kindly to this blatant conjecture, as we are of the view that he is the people's King not just by virtue of popular will, but by the will of God, and as such he is entitled to rule by divine right. In view of this our party protests against the current draft of the constitution which would decidedly limit the powers of the King. Whilst we welcome the fact that the King may choose whether or not to give his Royal Assent to certain bills, we vehemently oppose the notion that he does not have the power to prorogue Parliament, call new elections or dismiss ministers or cabinet members (including the Prime Minister) if he so wishes, or ban particular parties that are seen as dangerous to the national well-being.

As the symbol of the people, the monarch must have sufficient power to enforce a certain amount of moral discipline of the people, as must act as the nation's irrevocable link between themselves and God. We demand that the constitution is changed in order to give the King the extra aforementioned powers, as well as the power to declare war and to make peace.

We hope this is not too much to ask.

Signed,
-Menelik II, Chairman of the Belgian Monarchist Party

Les Chroniques Belges [13/4/1831]

The Walloonian Victory

The Liberal-Conservative Walloonian Party has attained Victory in the General Elections a few days ago, with the Support of the one independent participant Lord Gough. This elections have been a very close one and Both the Nationalists as well as Liberal-Conservatives had nearly equal support but the tide was turned, simply because of the support of one independent, Lord Gough with one seat. The Nationalists and Monarchist soon formed a Coalition after the Liberal-Conservative Victory in order to form the Opposition which holds just 1 less seat than the Government.

Flemish Discontent

Soon after the General Elections, several protests have been occuring in the Flemish Provinces and the Majority French-speaking areas. The protesters after being interviewed revealed that they fear the change of the Official Language to Dutch and that they fear a domination of Walloonians over the Flemish Ethinicity. Some extremists elements even suggest another War of Independence in order to free themselves from the Walloonian Government.

Dutch Spies Caught

On the 10th of April, 3 Spies in the Army's Officer Corps were caught after an attempt to send information via an informant across the Border to the Neatherlands. 3 Spies were notable commanders and relatively high rank, one of whome was even expected to be promoted in a few months time. This revelation has left the Army in dismay and the spies have now been sent for interrogation. It is suspected that the Neatherlands may soon be planning a possible invasion to takeover Belgium, once again.

Expedition Africa

The private expedition financed by Lord Lambert had planned on uncovering lands, inland in Africa. They had started their treck from Port Mozambique in Eastern Africa and have been able to uncover and partially navigate several routes and regions within Africa. They have revealed sighting of several creatures previously rarely seen and in some cases absolutely unknown, sighting of magnificent waterfalls and gigantic rivers, plains and forests. They even tell stories about savage tribesmen who have been able to kill 10 of the explorers while 23 others succumed to unknown diseases. The remaining 5 have successfully returned but are yet to give a proper account of their journey.

~ Signed,
Chief Editor, Alexander Lievens
