when i look back at the grand scheme of me and TF2, i'm pretty sure i spent WAY less time on these servers than i have the rest of the game since they shut down, but they're still a core memory for me of the game when it was at its original boom since i was young and it was a place that was really consistent.
were all the regulars on HN upstanding and amazing gamers? no, its TF2. there's going to be a lot of trash coming into almost every server; but i also remember there was a sizeable chunk of regulars that were honestly just cool people, and i think with an older moderation team it could run pretty smoothly.
if enough people here are interested, let me know and i'll start renting a server; i'm more than okay with paying a literal sliver of my income every month if it means rebuilding a community of old and new people from the community.
There's plenty of other gaming communities. Irl communities too. Both full of potentially like-minded people to fill the Highernation void with. Go find them.
But then I recall that a lot of the community regulars were weird, racist, gooners and/or losers (myself included; it's been a fair bit of time and I've learned not to be a self-hating brown person and to touch grass) and much of us, as server admins, weren't super far off from that either given the fact that we fostered said community through either participation or indifference. I was like 15 or 16 when I was made admin. That is so wacky, dude. Like, who let that happen lol. It's so nuts that some edgy little teenager was vouched for as admin but this all sorta speaks to the previous thing, I guess; It's not like we were creating the coolest, raddest community or anything. We were all a bunch of edgy children and 20-somethings.
