John 8:6-9

John 8:6-8
6 This they said, testing Him, that they might have something of which to accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.
7 So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”
8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

Now, this is an interesting and deep connection, and many people don't see the reference Jesus Christ made there:

Exodus 31:18:
And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
Deuteronomy 9:10:
Then the Lord delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words which the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

Here is a good explanation of Christ's act there: By writing on the ground, He made a reference to the fact that He is the One Who gave all laws, including the law about adultery.

This is the most logical interpretation of that act and of why it is mentioned (not only once but twice) that Jesus Christ wrote on the ground, which shows that His act had meaning behind it.

According to the old law, both adulterers had to be punished, but the Pharisees, by trying to trap Jesus Christ, brought only the woman (they should have brought both the woman and the man who were caught in adultery). They tried to make Him answer incorrectly, so they could accuse Him of violation.

But Jesus Christ, our great Lord, obviously foresaw what they were trying to do, so He wrote on the ground (showing that He is God and knows the laws better than any of them) and said the famous: 'He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.' (showing the hypocrisy of the Pharisees).

And afterward, He showed great mercy toward the woman by forgiving her: "Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more." (John 8:11).

Another interesting connection:

John 8:8-9:
8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Jeremiah 17:13:
Lord, You are the hope of Israel;
all who forsake You will be put to shame.
Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust
because they have forsaken the Lord,
the spring of living water
.

"all who forsake You will be put to shame" (Jeremiah 17:13) ->
"Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one"

"Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust" (Jeremiah 17:13) ->
"And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground"

Yeah, that may not be a direct prophecy - but who knows? Anyway, it's still a very profound connection.

Mark 2:28 (parallel: Matthew 12:8, Luke: 6:5, John 5:16-18)

Mark 2:28:
So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.'
John 5:16-18:
So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense Jesus said to them, 'My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.' For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Jews understood that Jesus Christ was making Himself equal with God (calling Himself God).

"Lord of the Sabbath" is the unique title of God.

Exodus 31:12-13:
12 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
Ezekiel 20:12:
I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I the Lord made them holy.

Now, think about this: how can any creature be the LORD of the unique sign between God and Israel? Can any angelic being or a mere human prophet claim to be the "LORD of the Sabbath"?
If the Sabbaths belong to God, then NO ONE BESIDES GOD HIMSELF can rightfully claim to be the "Lord of the Sabbath".

There is only One Lord of the Sabbath - our Triune God Himself.

Therefore, Jesus Christ, by sharing the same Divine essence with the Father and the Holy Spirit, can rightfully claim to be the Lord of the unique sign between God and Israel, because He is God.

Mark 2:5-7 (parallel: Matthew 9:2-8, Luke 5:17-26)

Mark 2:5-7:
5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.
6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,
7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

The Jews knew that only God can forgive sins. If we sin against God, then only He can forgive us or condemn us to hell, because He is the Judge (Psalm 50:6). So, Jesus Christ clearly showed there that He is God.

Some may say, "Well, the Apostles could also forgive sins. So, what's the difference?"

The difference is quite simple and obvious - the Apostles received the authority to forgive sins only after they received the Holy Spirit from Jesus Christ.

John 20:22-23:
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

So, technically speaking, it wasn't the Apostles themselves who forgave sins by their own human authority, but rather the Holy Spirit within them. And since the Holy Spirit is God Himself, He can forgive sins.

By the same logic, bishops and priests also have the authority to forgive sins after confession. (CCC 1442–1444).

Some may continue, "Well, how do we know that Jesus Christ forgave sins because He is God Himself, and not simply because He received the authority from the Father?"

The answer is simple - Jesus Christ Himself breathed the Holy Spirit upon Apostles. And as we already established in the previous section, only God can do that (Ezekiel 36:26–27; Joel 2:28–29, etc.). No angel, no prophet, no apostle, and no priest could/can give the Holy Spirit - only God can.

Therefore - Jesus Christ is God.

Matthew 3:3 (parallel: Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4, John 1:23)

Matthew 3:3: (he - John the Baptist)
For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.'”

John the Baptist qouted Isaiah 40:3:

Isaiah 40:3:
The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make straight in the desert
A highway for our God”.

Now we need to clarify, who John the Baptist was there.
Jesus Christ Himself told us in Luke 7:27 by qouting Malachi 3:1:

Luke 7:27 (he - John the Baptist):
This is he of whom it is written:
“Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,
Who will prepare Your way before You
.”
Malachi 3:1:
“Behold, I send My messenger,
And he will prepare the way before Me
...”

So, John the Baptist was the messenger, who was sent to prepare the way before Yᵊhōvâ - to baptize with water.

John 1:26-34:
26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.
27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.
33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.

Who promized to "baptize" with the Holy Spirit? - God.

Ezekiel 36:26–27:
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
Joel 2:28-29:
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

How do we know that this was about the Holy Spirit? - Saint Peter told us in Act 2:14-17:

Act 2:14-17:
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.
15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
...

LET'S BREAK DOWN:

Saint John the Baptist was the prophesied messenger sent to prepare the way before the Lord (YHWH).
->
He declared that the One coming after him - the One for Whom he was preparing the way - wiill baptize with the Holy Spirit.
->
But according to the Old Testament, only God can pour out or baptize with the Holy Spirit (His Spirit).
->
Jesus Christ is the One, Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
->
Therefore, the Lord (YHWH), for Whom John prepared the way (Isaiah 40:3; Malachi 3:1), and Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26–27; Joel 2:28–29, etc), is Jesus Christ.

It couldn't be clearer. Jesus Christ is YHWH in the flesh.

John 1:14

John 1:1:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:14:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

the Word (God) became flesh. Everything is quite obvious. Already from John 1, the case is closed - the Bible, as clear as day, teaches that Jesus Christ is God.

CONNECTION:

John 1:14:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
Zechariah 2:8-10:
8 For thus says the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) of hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.
9 For surely I will shake My hand against them, and they shall become spoil for their servants. Then you will know that the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) of hosts has sent Me.
10 “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord.

So, the Lord of hosts said: "that the Lord of hosts has sent Me" -> Yᵊhōvâ has sent Yᵊhōvâ...

John 6:38:
For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Yᵊhōvâ has sent Yᵊhōvâ ->
the Father (Yᵊhōvâ) has sent the Son (Yᵊhōvâ) ->
There is only ONE Yᵊhōvâ (Deuteronomy 6:4) ->
the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit) is ONE Yᵊhōvâ.

So you see, the concept of the Trinity isn’t some made-up idea, as some enemies of Christianity claim. The Trinity is actually the only concept that makes sense of all those verses. In fact, ancient Jews had a concept known as the "Two Powers in Heaven" - essentially a binitarian view (two Persons who are one God). They believed in that concept, because of verses like Zechariah 2:8-10, Genesis 19:24, etc.

Genesis 19:24:
Then the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord (Yᵊhōvâ) out of the heavens.

So, there is only ONE Triune YHWH (the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit).

Isaiah 9:6

Isaiah 9:6:
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 10:21:
The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the Mighty God.

In short:

It’s clear from Isaiah 9:6 that the Messiah - our Lord Jesus Christ, is God, judging by the names He is called.

In detail:

The prophesied Messiah - Jesus Christ is called:

1. "Wonderful" - is connected to the Old Testament theophanies of the Second Person. To fully understand this, we need to explore those theophanies in detail - which is too much to cover here, so perhaps in another article. Or, you can read St. Justin Martyr, St. Irenaeus, or other early Christians/Church Fathers.

2. "Counselor" - is used for the same reason the Holy Spirit - the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity is called Helper.

John 7:39:
37On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 14:26:
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

The Eternal Word guided (counseled) the Apostles and others on how to live according to His (God's) will, how to be saved, etc. The Holy Spirit clearly does the same, because He is God Himself.

3. "Mighty God" - is as clear as day. The Son who was born - Jesus Christ, is the Mighty God Himself, according to the prophecy of Isaiah.

Yet some anti-Christians argue, “See? It says 'Mighty God', not 'Almighty God'.”

This argument is complete nonsense, because even the Father - Whom they recognize as God, is called “Mighty God” in the very same book of Isaiah.

Isaiah 10:20-22:
20 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
Will never again depend on him who defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the Mighty God.
22 For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea,
A remnant of them will return;
The destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

And other places: Deuteronomy 10:17, Jeremiah 32:18, Nehemiah 9:32, Psalm 24:8...

So the Son, like the Father, is "Mighty God" - because the Father and the Son are One... God.

John 10:30:
I and My Father are one.

4. "Everlasting Father" - Jesus Christ is called this way because:

- His origin is from "everlasting" (from the days of eternity):

Micah 5:2:
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.

- He is "the author of eternal salvation":

Hebrews 5:7-9:
7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,
8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,
John 3:16:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

- He is God:

John 14:9:
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
John 10:30:
I and My Father are one.”
John 1:1:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

5. "Prince of Peace" - because after His judgement - there will be peace:

John 5:22-23:
22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,
23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
Psalm 50:6:
Let the heavens declare His righteousness,
For God Himself is Judge. Selah
Revelation 21:4:
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

-Whoever believes in Him already has peace:

John 14:27:
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
