Update 7/23/2009

Tried unsuccessfully to recompile a L4D model, but I have some things I'm going to try next time that I think I may have done wrong. If any of the hopkinton guys want to hang out and see what I've been doing/have me show you how to do any of this stuff I'll do that. I have to work on this primarily on weekends because I'm so tired after work that it's tough to stay awake let alone concentrate. In other news, our code is up on Sourceforge, so anybody who wants in should register an account there and then notify me with their user names immediately so I can set you up to use it. Everyone who wants to be involved will need to be able to access the mod's code- not only the coders. I'm setting up a forum and a wiki, I will try to have links to both up on this page as well as a link to the project home page on Sourceforge by the end of the night.

First model successfully decompiled!

I have successfully decompiled an Infected model! The next step will be to recompile it for use in HL2, which I am confident I will be able to do. Once I have placed it in a map, I will be back for another update.

Subversion is working!

Okay, this is the first major breakthrough with our subversion hosting- I've got a folder on my desktop connected to the folder in our project directory on Sourceforge.net! Now I'm going to check and see if I can get a fresh mod loaded into that directory. We'll see how that turns out very soon!

Version Control Hosting

I'm setting up version control hosting through Sourceforge. If anybody has a problem with this let me know. Also if anybody can help with this, let me know hahaha this stuff is a little confusing for me.

We're going to have a forum, and apparently some kind of wiki available. I intend to use the wiki as a design doccument if I can keep the public from viewing it willy-nilly. If not we'll make one on our own server, that I can do easily by myself. I need people to help me out by registering for the mod team through Sourceforge and others to help by trying to look at things when they aren't members so we know who can see what.

Final Ruling

This mod will be created in HL2 using models imported from L4D wherever possible. We're still up in the air about what kind of mod we want to choose in the wizard, but this is a big step forward. Anybody thinking of working with modeling will want to check out the following links:

Valve Modeling Page:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Category:Modeling

Decompiling L4D models

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=765200&highlight=decompile+L4D+models

For Everyone Else- SDK Docs Home:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SDK_Docs

Help Needed with Model Decompiler

Hey, if anybody is willing to help me figure out how to install this model decompiler, I'm having trouble figuring out what directory to put it in. If you're willing to help, we can steam chat.

This is the link to the page in the SDK wiki:

http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Mdldecompiler

Platform

Due to the fact that source code was not released with L4D our options stand as follows:

1.) Create a HL2 map using materials, models imported from L4D. Not sure how that works and whether you get the animations with it, but I would imagine so and I would imagine this is probably our best option

2.) Do what we can using only scripting in L4D

Note: We can probably also use scripting in HL2 to do a lot of the stuff we want to without diving too far into the source code and getting overwhelmed

Lemme know what you think, we'll provide you with more information as we learn it
