I'm sure that there are a lot of inactive groups that are more your pace. I'm happy they are coming back alive. 1-2events a week is far from event spam.

Boy I'm loving this secret TF2 server. These super secret custom mods are the greatest. What the pyro does after he gets an air-blast kill? Priceless.

starting a trend, change yer name to have three letters which make what it was last or you want it to be currently then put your favorite text emote after it.... so like this: "Svr :3"

I'm gonna add my voice to Dfaran's here and say that you really should give TF2 another chance. I really miss the server and would love to see it back again.
I realize the new stuff is a bit much to take in; I've come back to it after long hiatuses a few times now and every time things initially feel totally wonked out. They're really not that different, though; there's just a bit more variety to what you can play, and you have annoying crap pop up every once in a while. The new stuff is really just a way to keep the replay value up. It keeps things more dynamic than if we were still playing the same vanilla version that's been out for years.
I do understand your PoV. I've been there a few times (this last being the most initially disturbing), but after a bit I got used to, and even started to enjoy, the newness. I just think it's a shame to have to play on servers less awesome than yours =/
