Here's a QC snippet of a model where I've chosen the material order using $TextureGroup in order to get the Source FilmMaker override material order I want, as an example:

Source probably thinks "now I should render material 1... done, now for material 2... done, now for material 3..." etcetera etcetera, in which case with transparent materials and other special effects, the order might make a difference.

Anyway, I know putting a $TextureGroup list with the materials of the model can change the internal order of the materials in the MDL (which is seen when making override materials in Source FilmMaker, for example), as long as $TextureGroup is put before all $Model, $Body, $BodyGroup, etcetera lists. Does that help with anything, jario_362?

We would, but there's no MDL-to-DMX converter around yet, only MDL-to-[SMD and VTA], leaving us no choice.

Not the files, the material names in Blender.

In Blender, right-click the mesh to select it, then on the right (where you export SMDs/VTAs/
/DMXes), scroll "down" in the horizontal list of icons, and click on the materials tab. It should be the second-most right thing, I think.
Here, there should be at least three materials, though depending on mesh some times four or more. One for the head, optionally one for the body, then one named exactly "eyeball_l" and another named exactly "eyeball_r".
Select the faces you want to be the left eye, click on "eyeball_l" in the materials list, then click the "Assign" button. Do the same for the right eye.

Note: If you decompiled with Crowbar, the problem might be that the materials have folder paths in front of "eyeball_l" and "eyeball_r". Right-click the material name (I think), then change it to just "eyeball_l", and do the same with "eyeball_r". If you have more problems, let me know.

Are you sure the eyes are actually assigned to eyeball_l/eyeball_r materials, and are you using the correct mesh for $Model?

It's not Source FilmMaker-specific at all. Maybe unless you take the "FilmMaker" part out. (Yes, it's Source-specific.)
Team Fortress 2's unused(?) "HWM" models also have "preset" files for emotions, phonemes, and visemes, and in fact those are the ones loaded by Source FilmMaker when spawning Source FilmMaker's own "HWM" models, not some Source FilmMaker-specific versions of them.

A preset is basically just an extra slider for the model which affects multiple other sliders, and can be used by probably many versions of the Source Engine.
