For the $Sequence line in the SMD QC, I suggest using head.smd, not anims\ragdoll.smd.
Likewise for $Sequence in the DMX QC, I suggest using head.dmx and not anims\ragdoll.dmx.

Please copy-paste the entire QC file here, and also show some screenshots of the head going crazy with a .DMX export and being fine with an .SMD export.

The Half-Life Model Viewer still doesn't care at all about material proxies, just so you know.

Whether you use SMD or DMX has (basically) no effect on the resulting model, and in either case, you can use whatever material(s) you want (as long as they are comptaible with models).

The Half-Life Model Viewer doesn't take material proxies into account. Any material proxies you use won't have an effect in that model viewer. This includes all forms of texture animation. So for materials with proxies, you should just look at it inside an actual Source game.

From what I know, you have to download Source SDK, not any of the Source SDK "bases", just Source SDK, and then launch it once, then you should have the sourcesdk_contents thingie.
At least that's how it works on Windows.

Switch to Edit Mode and select the entire 3D mesh.

I only tend to block people who try adding me as a Steam friend without even bothering to leave a comment on my Steam profile to explain why first.

If you click "Options" > "Viewmodel Mode" at the top, the view will be put where it would be for the viewmodel. Then at the bottom, in the "Render" tab, you can type in a value for the field-of-view... but you have to remember that this won't be the exact same field-of-view as in Team Fortress 2, due to the "Team Fortress 2 using that field-of-view for 4:3 and making it wider for 16:9" thing I was talking about earlier.
