Is bow, dress, leg, leg2, lower_body, thigh, thigh2, and upper_body linked to the same armature in Blender? If so, try changing the $Sequence line to load upper_body instead of "reference".

Not directly that I know of, as from what I know, the materials are listed in the SMD in the order of the first triangle to use them. This means you can possibly indirectly change it by duplicating the arm mesh and then remove the original arm mesh, but again, you can't directly set it, so it can't be relied on too much.

However, you can easily do something like -- in the QC file (at some point before loading a(n) SMD/DMX with the materials) to add a "Weapon.vmt" material and then an "Arm.vmt" material (without necessarily adding multiple skins to the model in $TextureGroup), so the "Weapon.vmt" material is embedded into the model before the "Arm.vmt" material. This has worked in the case of someone wanting to layer copies of a mesh over itself in a specific order for a Source FilmMaker model.

Does MarkeststreetSTplate-ref.smd actually exist (in the same directory as the QC file, unless the QC has commands to load from another folder)?

I believe you can go into the weight paint mode thingie on the mesh, and then find some sort of "limit to X amount of bones" button, but I don't remember where it is or what it's actually labelled as... Plus that'll be a permanent effect on the mesh even in Blender, unless you un-do it after exporting.
As you could expect, all advice I have is to use the latest version of Blender and the Blender Source Tools, but I understand if you need to use older versions due to plug-ins.


But remember, you can always save the session, load it in the latest version of Blender, set the weight link cull threshold, export it, and then quit the latest Blender and go back to version 2.69 to continue working on the stuff, as a last resort or something.

In the Source export tab, either a bit below or a bit above the export button, should be a "Weight Link Cull Threshold" thingie. (Not being home, I can't check right now.) Just slide this all the way up to 1.0. Note that this only appears if you're exporting as DMX... but then again, this issue is non-existant for SMD models.

Or if you want to fix it manually, just make sure there's not a single vertice of the model that is rigged/weighted to more than 3 bones.

Go to Object Mode, press Alt+H to unhide any potential hidden objects, press A once or twice to select all objects, then hit Ctrl+A and choose "Apply" > "Rotation & Scale".

You may want to save the Blender session before doing this, and then reload it after exporting the SMDs/DMXes, in case it'll mess stuff up in Blender.

I'm certain this is due to imported SMDs by default being "welded" and smoothened, meaning the pillars are no longer flat-shaded once they're imported. The "preserve normals"(?) option keeps this from happening... but makes it a bit harder to edit. (Alternatively you could just flat-shade the pillars manually.)

I haven't downloaded and tried the Blender session you provided, but I'm going to assume you're using polygons with more than 3 sides. The SMD format itself only supports triangles, so any quads and other polygons with more than 3 sides will be converted into triangles on export. When importing, they will remain as triangles.

Another possibility is that you may be rigging vertices to less than or more than a sum of 1.0 when all bone weight values are added up. Or maybe you're using some modifiers that can't be exported/imported correctly.

As this is in the Blender Source Tools forum, I'm going to assume you're using Blender for this. So go to the materials tab of a mesh, remove "usermod/materials/models/maniac/nwmercy/", without quotes, from the names of all materials of that mesh, then select another mesh. Repeat this until you've done this with every material of every mesh.
(Or if "usermod/materials/models/maniac/nwmercy/" is not in front of the material names, you should look for the "Material Path" string in the Source Engine Export window, and then clear it out so it's blank, as the material path you can embed into DMX files is very buggy, with $CDMaterials being a much better alternative.)
