True, but there isn't really anything linking Blenders materials to what gets exported. The material inteface has a complex system attached to it, since the exporter doesn't use any of the settings in it apart from the name, it seems pretty counterintuitive to have the name you set there dictate what string gets exported. Add to that the separate UV/Image system, it gets even more confusing (even with the selection box that allows you to toggle between them).
Also, if my suggested view filtered for materials that are actually applied to faces, it would give an easy way of checking that the right material is applied before exporting.
