Materials on imported props go completely black when I use the submaterial tool
I'm not sure how to fix this. I import props with the expressed purpose of using the submaterial tool to alter them later on, and when I do, particularly with materials that have some reflective properties, it goes rather wrong, the materials i've changed go completely pitch black when the prop is frozen or even just moving around.

How would I go about fixing this? Do I have the do something to the base materials I use?

yeah, I have had this problem as well.
Try this...
Go into the Renders Property panel,
Find Performance,
Toggle the High Quality Normals Check Box from what it is now. (if it's off, toggle it on)

See if that fixes the problem. (You may have to do this for every mesh Object, I forget if it's a global setting)
