You should not have shared your account.

Let me list the points:

A) Your ban is less than four years old.
B) You haven't bothered to check your ban in four years.
C) You admit to violating the terms of service, which could result in Valve shutting down your entire account.

Of course, this is impossible, and with a bit of bad luck, you'll be facing point C, since you've already provided the evidence.

I can't imagine buying an account without either first checking if it's banned, or checking if the ban can be removed or not before buying it. I imagine I'd feel quite stupid if I did so.

you already in breach of steam TOS by giving your account to him, which means the account can be terminated. Secondly the ban have already been checked and rechecked, so it is correct and permanent. Also if you actually gone to the profile and clicked on the info button next to the ban, then you would have seen that bans cannot be appealed or removed and items/games cannot be moved to another account
